David Villa’s scoring record for Spain and Valencia is impressive – but, how many of those 35 strikes for Spain were penalties or free kicks?

Torres strike record although not as numerous are all from open play – 71 caps for a 25 yr old now that’s impressive!

Raul’s understudy now Villa’s strike partner…..he’s an asset to any team!

      Hello Robbie,

I agree about your assessment of Torres; there is no doubt he is a great talent and a threat to any defense. I just feel David Villa and Brazil’s Luis Fabiano have a better chance of topping the scoring list considering their respective record with their national team. Villa has been a consistent scorer for Valencia the past couple of years too. The threat to them would probably come from Drogba, depending on how difficult the Ivory Coast’s group is, and from perhaps Lionel Messi if he can duplicate his club form and Maradona can finally create the feeling of a united group as opposed to a bunch of stars playing together.

        KLOSE SECOND HIGHEST GOAL SCORER

My Vote is for Drogba. I think the Ivory Coast will make a strong march through the competition. If I were a betting man, I would wager that the American President thinks he will be the biggest scorer of the Cup though.

As the summer of 2010 draws near, this president will prepare himself to take center stage at the world’s biggest gathering of sports enthusiasts. President Obama will embrace the “world’s game’” at the pinnacle of its spectacle, and will shine brightly as the biggest star at the world’s biggest game in its most unusual of settings. As the Cup ventures to Africa for the first time in the competition’s history, the first African-American President will take full advantage of the opportunity to share his message of a “changed America” with an audience of 700,000,000+ who will tune in for the Final and the more than 5 billion viewers who will watch the full slate of games. For a President committed to “restoring” America’s image in the global community, the World Cup will be his greatest moment. World-wide “apology tours” and UN speeches reach only a limited audience, but the pulpit that is the World Cup will be limitless.

So yes, he will go. He will go and the world will embrace him. He will take with him his message of hope, of change, and of a nation recast in the image of a new and refined face on the world’s stage. He will arrive in Johannesburg not as a conquering hero but as a returning son, and he will attempt to undue the atrocities envisioned in his own mind by bowing at the alter of the world’s greatest game. The only question is whether once the applause stop and the cheers go silent, will anyone truly listen to the Chosen One and his message? Africa embraced Ali because he was a smooth talker and promised big results, upon which he delivered. South Africa rallied around Nelson Mandela because he personified much needed change and his very freedom generated hope, which has helped sustain the country’s march to actualized equality. Will President Obama finally find his moment of redemption where he will for the first time connect with citizens of the world and generate tangible results, or will this simply be another love, apology, and appeasement tour that will do little more than generate hype, big crowds, and adoring audiences but only succeed in diminishing further the nation’s position in the global community? Perhaps a more fitting question to be posed regarding our prognosticating Chief Executive would be – as he fills out his tournament bracket as he did with the NCAA Basketball tournament, will he bet on the United States when he picks a winner or will he think such a choice will represent exceptionalism and lead to yet another apology tour if we should win?

      Hi T. Christopher,

Drogba is certainly a threat when one considers his scoring record for the Ivory Coast and I personally wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up top scorer in WC 2010, but it’s too difficult to tell given the many unknown variables. The quality of the group his country will be placed in, Drogba’s own form and of course his physical condition will all play a role in deciding if he can compete for the top scorer’s title. Then you have to factor in whether there is a surprise newcomer since the World Cup tends to have its own stars such as Toto Schillaci in 1990 or Oleg Salenko who scored five goals for Russia against Cameroon during WC 1994 (Salenko would score one more goal to finish tied with Buglaria’s famous star Stoichkov and share with him the Golden Boot). Anything is possible making the World Cup a fascinating event which transcends any other sports tournament.

It has to be a player from a team going far in the tournament like Brazil or Spain or perhaps a strong team grouped with minnows or weaker defensive teams.

Messi is the best player overall but he plays in a different position than with Barca and Argentina have more strikers than Barca. I think Messi will score but also be provider.

My bet will be either Brazil’s Luis Fabiano because Brazil will go far and create goals, or Rooney because England has an easy group (defensively both USA & Algeria are weak). I can see Rooney scoring in all 3 group matches if he is fit.

      Great Y2SJ!!!!
Your idea is the same to me.
Of course, Miroslav Klose is very accurate in both shot and header.
Germany alway score more goal than the other and amongst of those is Klose’s.
So I support Klose to be the best player in world cup all times.
And Germany beat England and Argentina and is going to beat Spain and Nehterlands.
So the superpower in the world will be defeated by Germany.
Finally, German will be the 4 time champions include 2010.
      Be the best, Germany. Viva

        Hi Clinton,

I originally thought of a Brazil vs Argentina (or Spain) in the Final and I still believe it will likely happen. Brazil will overcome the Dutch unless there’s a shocker or major injuries or red cards. Holland had easy route to the QF and did not really impress in the 2nd half vs Slovakia.

As for Argentina, I think the Germans will not be able to match them in the attack since both teams will likely score and both have a weak defensive line.

As for Spain, I think Argentina will eliminate them in the semi-final. The Spaniards have great ability to maintain ball possession and are better than all the other teams at keeping the ball (big part due to presence of Xavi) but they do not have the threat in front of goal besides David Villa. Torres is not 100% and is lacking in confidence.

I think the top scorer will emerge from one of those countries (Brazil, Argentina or Spain) because they are expected to go furthest in this tournament.

Feel free to check this piece:

      Hello John,

You are right list should include Higuain but this was done November of 2009. I still suspect L. Fabiano of Brazil or D. Villa of Spain will be top scorer. It will depend on which team reaches the Final.
Despite not scoring, I still think Messi has been most influential but this is about scoring goals and for Argentina Messi will be more of a provider than a scorer.

      Hi,

Messi is the best players in the World but it does not mean he will be top scorer in South Africa 2010. He has yet to score but it doesn’t mean he’s been playing bad. Messi is just being marked by multiple players and is not allowed the freedom to roam. This allows other players from Argentina to benefit and score goals.

Many of Messi’s moves have helped the team score such as against South Korea and Mexico (first goal was scored by Tevez from Offside but after Messi’s ball forward).

Check these 2 pieces covering Messi on http://www.LaLigaTalk.com and feel free to reach me on Twitter @RamiSoufi

For Spain to have any chance of reaching the Final, they will need Villa to keep scoring. Torres is short on fitness, form and confidence at the moment. On the other hand, Argentina can win the WC even if Higuain doesn’t score anymore because they have Messi, Tevez and others.

I think Luis Fabiano has a big chance too because Brazil’s attacks often allow him space and time to finish off the attacking moves by the other players.

    Hi Norbu,

Villa certainly has a big chance since he’s become Spain’s main and perhaps only scoring option with Torres struggling for form.

They key is whether Spain will reach the Final and if Villa be marked closely by Paraguay’s players.

I think it’s between Villa, Higuain, Tevez and Luis Fabiano. Messi is still the best player but I cannot see him scoring 5 goals in the World Cup with the marking he’s facing from opponents. This could all change if he finds the net against the Germans. I think Argentina will reach the Final if Germany is beaten. This will give Tevez, Higuain and even Messi more chances to score goals.

      Hi Fini,

I think Klose has better chance than Villa because the Germans will play Uruguay while Spain must face the Dutch.

The Germans will want to at least take a major positive besides finishing 3rd from this tournament. They’ve proved critics wrong by reaching semi-final but now they want Klose to be all-time leading scorer in WC history. So, perhaps at least a goal in 3rd play playoff match.

The fact is the unmentioned have become the top goal scorers; Germany’s Miroslave Kilose and Thomas Muller. I am not clear why the owner of this website forgot the name of Miroslove Kilose from the beginning. The unmentioned have become the top scorers…Kilose and Muller. Truth is always where people do not think or dream. Germany shall prevail in the world cup final.

Current Top scorer is actually David Villa. I wrote this Nov. 2009 and back then Klose was not guaranteed a spot on the German team. Even throughout the season he was mostly a fringe player on Bayern Munich.

Credit to the midfielders for creating easy scoring opportunities for Klose. At this point, Klose should be added to the list since he has 2 more games to score more goals.

HA! So cute. I don’t see any Netherlands players on the list and right now the top scorers are Wesley Sneijder and David Villa which will probably be taken out by Germany tomorrow.

How many goals did Kaka scored? oh wait, 0!

    What a sad prediction :)

Well all the football players they mentioned are really good players that deserve to be mentioned in this website but I think Lionel Messi is good enough to take the 2010′s World Cup top scorer cup. But, even though I think Lionel Messi should take the cup, Cristiano Ronaldo has been outstanding in Fifa World Cup tournaments so I think he should walk off with the cup aswell.

Hey Jack, the top scorers were Klose, Villa, Forlan and Muller but Muller got it all after having more assists.
