Thierry Henry Handball Sends France To World Cup

thierry henry handball1 Thierry Henry Handball Sends France To World Cup

French striker Thierry Henry committed a blatant handball against Ireland today in the World Cup Qualifier which led to a goal by William Gallas and sent France to the 2010 World Cup, leaving Ireland’s dreams dashed and Irish football supporters feeling understandably bitter.

The blatant handball by Henry was disgraceful and a horrible way to send Ireland out of the World Cup qualifying. The world will look at this controversial incident and will lose a lot of respect for Thierry Henry, UEFA and FIFA.

What did you think of the incident? Is Thierry Henry a cheat? And what are your thoughts about referees being allowed to use video evidence so they can catch incidents like this that they obviously missed.

Crazy… a shame! I lost respect for Henry after this incident. It was a hand and it was clearly on purpose. Almost a basketball move to put the ball in his foot to make a pass to Galas that easily scored. Video should be allowed!!! Henry: you are a cheat, good luck every night when you go to bed…

Real shame for them to lose this way, but this won’t be the incident that changes FIFA’s long held opposition to video technology.

Look for the goal-line assistant currently being trialed in the Europa League to be their solution to this problem.

      Well said Matt.
Four cheats, four seconds or thereabouts. That’s not football and it sure as hell isn’t Fifa ‘Fair Play’. What a load of bollox. Did you see the recent Chelsea Man U match? (I support neither) but so long as those blue ballerinas get away with it the standards will drop in world football.
I know the cameras will be a pain in the arse, but I’d rather watch a fair game with a few seconds out than the crap I watched tonight or anytime I see a Chelsea match. Dogbreath will do well as a stuntman.

    wow…
    just watched this after listening to the extra-time on online radio;
he clearly scoops it up back into play with his left hand – unbelievable…

Fair enough that in the heat of the adrenalin-fuelled moment all of us have the potential to perform ‘ethically questionable’ acts, but that guy is a veteran professional of the highest standard – as are both linesmen and the referee and the other 21 players..

As a neutral watcher of this game, I must say that I know hope France gets eliminated in the first round of the WC. I just hate cheaters, that is why i did not want Italy to win in 2006, but France, but now I rather see New Zeland winning than France. That is why FIFA does not want camera replays, they favor certain teams, it is all about the money. This is a joke. Platini is french and he is a crook

France played so badly and Ireland played so well, including missing three sitters, this injustice is all the more bitter. Big decisions always go to the big countries and referee Hanson needn’t say he didn’t observe a handball. He may have been blind side to it but he couldn’t help but notice the way the ball changed direction when Henri cupped it in his hand and stopped it going dead. This has cost the FAI millions and millions.

On the other hand… I hope FIFA never allows video support for referees… one of the nice things of football is the human touch, so I hope they keep it like that.

Bad luck for Ireland… and good luck for France… as simple as that.

Would you have gone to the referee to say “I just touched the ball??”

    Anyway… unfair for Ireland.

I was a coach of a u12 girls soccer team recently.. We scored a goal with an extra player on the field, the referee missed it. As the other team went to kick off at center I noticed it for the first time, raised my hand, told the referee and he disallowed our goal (which was a very good goal). I then went to every player and made sure they knew what we did and why. They were all on board – if we were down 3-0 would I have made the same decision who knows, all I know is that we made the right call

Henry wont lose any sleep over this, he knew exactly what he was doing and if he felt guilt in any way he would have owned up. Cheating such as this is a disgrace to the game. This only backs up the on-going argument that video evidence is a necessity, and must be introduced to football in order to prevent unjust and ill made decisions made by referees and linesmen alike.

why video evidence similar to rugby union is beyond me particularly in games of great importance.
The rules need to be changed to allow this, and cheats like Henry exposed and given match bans.
Instead the way the rules stand the cheats are the victors and will continue to get away with this,i have lost alot of respect for the inteligence and integrity of the game untill something is done it.

Ok guys, you are all being little sissies, its a disgrace that you think Thierry did this on purpouse, as many know Henry is one of the most respectable players to watch and probably play with because of his heart for the game. Yes this was an offense, and yes Henry knows that what happened was wrong, but how many other times have teams/nations been cheated out of a penalty, a dive. Italy in 2006 world cup when they earned the penalty against Australia in the dying seconds which was complete rubbish. Think about the outcome of the 2006 world cup and how it would have changed. Shit happens, and thats it, France had the edge in the game anyway, and although Ireland put some great heart and effort, France deserved it in the end . Noone needs to be banned or suspended, but this brings to fact that maybe video evidence should be allowed under certain restrictions so that not only this wont happen, but the thousands of other fouls that changed the outcome of games dont happen again.

totally agree with moose. Tho i understand the irish fans and players bitterness. But the responsability is not Henrys. not even the referee. I think he sincerely didnt see the handball. FIFA has decided not to allow use of video evidence. They’re to blame. And once again, Platini (who is against video evidence but who didnt know Henry would do this tonight i’m sure) is not FIFA’s president !

This cheating spoils the game and takes away from the world cup. I have always been a Henry supporter but now I will forever look at him as nothing but a cheater, all of the great goals that he has scored in the past are gone, he is a dirty cheater like Maradonna is. I don’t even normally follow football but I am so disgusted by the outcome of that match that I felt moved to comment. I’ve seen a few comments online where people have said France would have won anyway despite this. Ireland were playing well, France were not. If those comments were true the French wouldn’t have needed to hand control a ball to set it up for a goal. Clearly Ireland could have won this game had the French not got that so called goal. Its an absolute travesty of justice and sportsmanship. My other half is french and is ashamed of his life. Disgusting… Disgusting… Disgusting… FIFA need to review this and take legitimate action and I don’t just mean introducing Video Ref. Google this cheats name and see how much coverage this has already gotten worldwide. The French Team’s image will suffer once again based on this… and deservedly so.

Who cares about video evidence at this point. It is perfectly clear that he handled the ball so FIFA should react. Instead they will bury their heads in the sand and wait for this to blow over. Other than the fact that this is a clear cut case of handball and cheating, this act also knocks Ireland out of the world cup and there is a HUGE economic impact to that. Ireland as a country, as well as their own football association would have made millions from their country being represented in S. Africa. Now France will earn this money instead, so not only is it cheating in a football game it’s also a form of robbery.

Liked the comment about “hope FIFA never allows video support for referees”. Well, me neither. I hope FIFA allow video support for someone IMPARTIAL to the referee.

Let’s look at history a moment, and consider FIFAs actions.

Remember the old (and partially connected) argument about time added on? Referee’s not getting it right, or even close in some cases? FIFA, after some considerable pressure about video evidence then, said they would introduce a “4th” official who would ensure the correct time is added on … wrong.

FIFA have introduced a 4th official … who then shows the time to add on, and the referee then adds on what the hell he feels like doing. So, in short, all you’ve got out of this deal, is a bloke who stands at the side of the pitch and shows a calculated number – nothing more.

As, oh so rightly put by another poster here, if the whole fucking world can view a reply adequately in 10 seconds, then a damned referee can (or better, a separate judge). The example given above shows what utter bollocks that out-of-touch FIFA talks about rules and systems.

This is why I’ve lost complete and utter respect for the sport and stopped watching a couple of years ago. I’m completely sick of watching far too many games where play is often completely irrelevant to the outcome, thanks to some awful management of the game.

We should all be lobbying FIFA directly, insisting video monitoring is done by a separate authority, who consults with the referee instantly, NOT beholden to him.

Consider this … when you go into a supermarket next, and somebody gets pinched for shoplifting, ask yourself this: how long did it take for the video to get viewed, a decision made, and the action of chase/arrest? Now very fucking long, and with all the respect in the world, those guys are hardly “trained” to the standards of referees.

well, well, well, are you all so blatantly short sighted and narrow minded. Thierry Henry just proved why he is one of the greatest footballers alive. What majestic skill to be able to handle a ball on the goal line without the ref seeing, placing it on his foot and tap it over to a team mate for a goal. Not just any goal, a World Cup Finals qualifying goal. He will sleep like a baby at night dreaming of the fact that tonights goal was probably the highlight of his career. The man is a god. He is the FACE and SOUL of modern soccer. Who other than Sir Thierry could be so calm and calculated while under such pressure. Stand up and salute the man.

This was a blatant handball, the Irish team have been robbed. As an Irish woman I am devastated. But no matter how we as an Irish nation are hurt , there is no need to lower ourselves by insulting Henry based on his colour and his nationality. Leave the personal insults aside and channel your anger towards this miscarriage. I hope he will admit his wrong doing and apologise to the Irish team who played with such pride and passion tonight.

This was disgraceful but the blame should lay at the feet of the linesman who clearly should have spotted both the offsides and the hand ball.Henry handling the ball was cheating but at the end of the day it was a goal that was going to send france to the finals(would you own up with knowing what was resting on it).He was wrong but that cant take all away from the player he is and what he has done for football. It is not going to to be over turned france are threw we are out.The irish team have done the country proud tonight its a shame a lot of the irish fans posting here tonight cannot do the same some of the ignorant, racist comments being posted a far worse than anything thierry henry has ever done on a football field.

Their slogan is fair play so they need to be seen to be acting on it… in google type ‘contact fifa’ and send them an email! They need to be sent millions of them, an entire nation has been robbed and fifa need to be seen to be enforcing their slogan, FIFA FAIR PLAY

I actually had a lot of respect for henry when he scored the goal against ireland in the last play off but he should really hang his head in shame. . feel sorry for the irish fans that traveled. Met alot of frenchies tonight and they were hanging there heads but no consolation.

Football is dead: the officials fixed the playoff draw.
Football is dead: the linesman saw the handball and didn’t call it. why?
Football is dead: a football hero/gentleman chose to cheat. twice. 2 handballs. not of the accidental variety. of the basketball scoop variety – conscious cheating.

shame on people in power (Uefa/FIFA) who cheat, shame on players who cheat and shame on every irish person i’ve heard tonight making excuses for Henry – anyone who has played football knows to scoop the ball, twice, is not an accident, so please stop making excuses for him.

i will no longer watch football.

France should not be in South Africa …….. You are there in shame …… and disgrace. Your a stain on the soul of Football. Your a cheat !!!

Unlucky, but these things happen. I’d like to see the Irish through as they gave a good, smart show tonight and throughout qualifying.

But fouls go missed all the time and indeed often decide the big matches.
As to Henry being a “bad guy” for letting it happen, or making it happen or whatever, he is a professional competitor, you don’t turn that off.

The Irish didn’t and he didn’t.

not sure henry is to blame, i am an Ireland fan…did anyone doubt that France would win? The real blame is on the officiating(FIFA????) since France invented WC makes me wonder…any football fan should be outraged though, this decided the fate of two nations…a goal is agoal in my book but this wasnt a fair goal. The sad reality is that Eire wont protest, and even if they did nthing will transpire. Fifa should auto replay this game and ref should be banned for a blatant missed call. I and almost everyone else is accountable at their job, good or bad, and these clowns are no different.

You guys act like as soon as the ball was played he thought “oh let me settle this with my hand”, not a chance, the ball took a bounce and like everyone of you losers on the site would have done he used his body, incidentally or purposely, the ball hit his hand. The man was thinking “I can send my country to South Africa” and he did indeed just that. Thierry Henry, You’re a great player.

Are you talking about my comment? How is this a disgracing win? Yes it should have been called, a clear handball and even offsides from some angles. But when you’re in that situation you DO WHATEVER YOU CAN. France was unlucky not to get in early in qualifying but they just got lucky today. Nothing at all against Henry.

I’m not a huge football fan but have 2 kids 11 and 9 who play football. How can I tell them that they should always do the right thing when it is blatantly obvious that cheaters win? All of this “fair play” talk is rubbish. The Irish players were the underdogs and when they were beating France FIFA and the French got nervous and cheated to ensure the BIG team got through to the World Cup – the game is reduced to the level “wrestlemania” – it is so obvious they’d already decided who was going to win!

From today on FIFA has no credentials as a Fair Play Organizer of sport anywhere on this Planet.
FIFA are the Laughing stock of the sports world and will never regain any respect if they dont deal with this matter urgently.
Ireland has been officially scammed from representing their country on the big stage and France have been given a helping hand by the one and only Mr Platini. This person is holding back the future of Football and he has also lost all respect as a leader of the beautiful game.
All the rules and regulations of football are now null and void, the whole world knew it was a handball and the whole world are sending a message to FIFA to either eliminate France or at least replay the Game. You made the rules so stand by them and stop cheating by making a definite example so this never happens again. No better time than now to show you are realy a fair play sporting organisation.

Anyone remember the ‘Hand of God’. Maradona got away with it that day and look what happened the gits went on to win it. I would hate to think the French could win it or it will just go to show ‘cheats do and can prosper’, well they already have I suppose as that goal will be worth millions to the French FA. As for FIFA having the guts to do anything about it then dream on. They are just as bad as UK MP’s with their noses in the trough… I know which fans I would like to see at the Wolrd Cup and it aint the French thats for sure, they could not hold a piss up in a brewery!!! Quit whining, losers, if you have ever played the game of soccer you’d know tht occasionally you instintively will use your hand. It is the duty of the referee to red card him and disallow the goal.
At least he was man enough to admit it unilke Maradona, 25 yrs later.
In any event you want to allow the best team forward that will enrich the sport and give beter ratings and viewership. That is not Ireland.

Dear Irish friends! I’m from Slovenia and we were better than Russia just like you were better than France! We were luckier to have fair referee that punished unfair behaviour of some Russian players (2 red cards). But what happened to you is one of the biggest disgrace in sport history! Unfortunately for you, this ref will probably be punished, but that dont help you much. Until this day I belived in fairnes especialy in footbal that is great sport with big organization behind.
