Its that time again to crown the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week. In South America, the Copa Libertadores final was set and champions crowned. The MLS continues its season and the CONCACAF Gold Cup is underway. Remember that the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week played matches and/or made headlines during the calendar week of June 29-July 5.

The winner is:

CLUB ATLÉTICO VÉLEZ SÁRSFIELD (ARG)
<img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3091/3229371849_f5bb3a6091.jpg?v=0" alt=" World Football Team Of The Week: #18 = June 29 July 5" v=0" title="World Football Team Of The Week: #18 = June 29 July 5" />
El Fortín captured its 7th Argentine title on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 over Huracán. The match was the last game of the 2009 Clausura and might have been the most memorable “championship” match in Argentine club football history. The game & trophy winning goal was scored in the 83rd minute by Maximiliano Moralez. After some 13 minutes of added time, the whistle blew and the Estadio José Amalfitani exploded as Vélez Sarsfield captured the title. Vélez was the only team to go the entire tournament undefeated at home and only lost once during the whole Clausura tournament. For their impressive championship campaign, Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield can add World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week to their trophy case.

What a week of exciting football action, MLS, Superliga, Recopa Sudamericana, Copa Libertadores, Asian Champions League, and of course FIFA Confederations Cup. You know summertime is just as busy as the fall, spring, and winter in football. Thankfully for us football lovers, its a year round sport. It was hard to choose a TOW because of the amount of action going around but we chose a worthy side. Remember that the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week played matches and/or made headlines during the calendar week of June 22-28:

The winner is:

UNITED STATES NATIONAL TEAM

The United States national team made huge strides with their play in the 2009 Confederations Cup. On the 24th, the Americans stunned the world with their 2-0 semifinal win against Spain. Goals by Jozy Altidore & Clint Dempsey ended Spain’s record unbeaten & winning streak. It was the greatest win in US Soccer history. In the final against Brazil, the US seemed to have repeated the Spain result when they were ahead of Brazil, 2-0 at halftime. However a brilliant 2nd half Brazil comeback ended US hopes of their 1st FIFA non-CONCACAF title with a 3-2 loss. The fact that the US held their own against the best two teams in the world is enough to give the United States National Team the award as World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Its that time once again to give praise to the football team that caught our attention more than any other squad. To let the world know that MAF recognizes their accomplishments. The World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week played matches and/or made headlines during the calendar week of June 15-21.

The winner is:

SPORT CLUB CORINTHIANS PAULISTA (BRA)

The team known as Timão had an eventful week beginning with their 2-0 home win in the 1st leg of the Copa Do Brazil final. Corinthians, appearing in the Copa final for the 2nd consecutive year, got goals by Jorge Henrique and O Fenômeno, Ronaldo. Corinthians will take the 2 goal edge into to Porto Alegre as their opponents Internacional look to deny Corinthians its 3rd Copa Do Brazil title. The Paulista State Champions finished the week with a 3-1 home victory over state rivals, São Paulo FC. 3 different goal scorers helped Corinthians to the victory and a 5th place position in the standings. Two wins against two of the top clubs in Brazil is quite a feat and worthy of the TOW. Therefore, Sport Club Corinthians Paulista wins the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

The drama never ends in the world of football especially when it comes down to qualifying for the World Cup. This past week was mostly about South Africa 2010 but MLS, Argentine Clausura, Campeonato Brasileiro, and other leagues were also in action and from those matches we will chose the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week. Remember that the TOW played matches and/or made headlines during the calendar week of June 8 – 14:

The winner is:

CLUB ATLETICO HURACAN (ARG)

The team known as El Globo wins the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week for their big 1-0 road win against San Lorenzo in the Argentine Clausura on Sunday. Paolo Goltz’s header in the 38th minute was enough to move Huracán into 2nd place as they leaped over Lanus in the standings. El Globo are unbeaten in their last 8 matches having won 7 of those encounters. Huracán were the only team in the Top 3 to play on the road and they came out victorious. For that reason, Club Atlético Huracán is the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Its the beginning of June and its time for World Cup qualifiers. Teams fighting for a place in South Africa 2010 were either packing their bags, getting one step closer to going, or officially dreaming of 2014. The World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week played matches and/or made headlines during the calendar week of June 1 – 7.

The winner is:

COSTA RICAN NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM (CRC)
The team known as Los Ticos asserted their place as the best team in CONCACAF right now with two big wins. On the 3rd, Costa Rica dominated the U.S. at the Estadio Saprissa by a score of 3-1. Rodrigo Kenton’s men scored twice in the first 13 minutes to deflate the Stars & Stripes. 3 days later, Los Ticos followed up that performance with a thrilling 3-2 road win against Trinidad & Tobago. Celso Borges 2nd goal of the match in the 69th minute gave Costa Rica the 3 points and a solid hold on 1st place in the CONCACAF hexagonal final stage. For winning 2 matches in 3 days, Costa Rica is the deserved winner of the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Last week was the end of the European club season and history was made. I think you know where I’m going with this week’s World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week. Remember that the winner made headlines and/or played matches during the calendar week of May 25 – May 31. The winner is:

FUTBOL CLUB BARCELONA (ESP)
Was there any doubt about this week’s winner? No. Barcelona became the 1st Spanish team to win the Treble. They finished their magical season with a powerful 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League Final against English champs Manchester United. Goals by Samuel Eto’o & Lionel Messi sealed the win for the Blaugrana. Barcelona becomes the 5th team to win a European continental treble joining Celtic in 1967, Ajax in 1972, PSV Eindhoven in 1988, Manchester United in 1999. Congratulations to the best club side in the world and the winner of the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

The Uruguayan side earns the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week award for their massive upset & elimintaion of Argentine & South American powerhouse Boca Juniors in the Round of 16 of the Copa Libertadores. Defensor beat Boca 1-0 at La Bombonera to advance to the quarters by a 3-2 aggregate. Diego de Souza’s goal in the 27th minute gave Uruguay’s I Viola the win an event the Argentine media are calling El Bombonerazo. The victory sent the Uruguayan side to their 2nd ever quarterfinal appearance as they look to take down another Argentine side when they face Estudiantes La Plata. For the stunning upset of Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores, Defensor Sporting Club of Uruguay is the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Ladies & Gentlemen, do we have a World Football Team Of The Week for you all. I guarantee that this team deserved the honor & stunned a nation. Remember that the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week made headlines and/or played matches during the calendar week of May 4 – May 10. The winner is:

EN AVANT DE GUINGAMP (FRA)

On Saturday, the Ligue 2 side pulled off a historic result by defeating Ligue 1 Rennes in the 2009 Coupe de France final. Brazilian striker Eduardo scored twice in the 2nd half to win Guingamp’s 1st ever trophy by a score of 2-1. The significance of the result is that Guingamp became only the 2nd non-Ligue 1 team to win the Coupe de France. The last non-Ligue 1 team to win the Coupe de France was Le Havre 50 years ago. Guingamp had to battle from the 7th round of the tournament (a stage with 162 teams from every division of France) to win it. Improbable odds for a Ligue 2 team but Guingamp came through. For their historic run to the Coupe De France title and a place in next year’s Europa League, En Avant de Guingamp is the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Barcelona is the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week for their 6-2 crushing of Real Madrid on Saturday. Granted their 0-0 draw on Tuesday in their 1st leg Champions League semifinal against Chelsea wasn’t impressive but in the biggest game of the season Barca came out and blasted their arch-rival in their arch-rival’s house. Blaugrana responded immediately to Real’s goals in a game that ended any talk of who is Spain’s best team. 2 goals each from Thierry Henry and Lionel Messi in the Spanish SuperClasico massacre. The annihilation was the perfect bounce back from the disappointing CL result. For their 6-2 demolition of Real Madrid in the Santiago Bernabeu, Futbol Club Barcelona is the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.

Its time to award the World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week to some lucky team. The winner should be honored because its a recognition of a team’s superior performance during the week. Remember that the WCB Team Of The Week made headlines and/or played matches during the calendar week of April 20 – 26.

The team also known as El Fortín get the honors as the MAF Team Of The Week for their big win on Sunday against Colón de Santa Fe. The match was a meeting of Top 3 teams in Santa Fe. Colón jumped out to a 2-0 lead and looked poised to move to the top of the table. However, Vélez showed their championship mettle in the 2nd half by scoring 4 goals to take the 3 points and keep their lead atop the ’09 Argentine Clausura standings. El Fortín’s Uruguayan hitman Hernán López scored twice in that big 2nd half to increase his goal scoring tally to 8 goals on the season, a number good enough to tie for 1st in the goal scoring table. For their incredible road comeback in a top of the table clash, Club Atlético Vélez Sársfield is World Cup Buzz Team Of The Week.
