Laurent Blanc To Be Next French Manager

Bordeaux Manager Laurent Blanc will accept the French Football Federation's offer and take over the French national team after this summer's World Cup. At Bordeaux Blanc, 44, achieved the French League and Cup double but finished a disappointing sixth in this year's campaign.

"Girondins Bordeaux have been informed by Laurent Blanc that he wanted to answer favorably to the French federation (FFF)'s solicitation to become the France coach," said Bordeaux in a statement. ""Girondins Bordeaux expect to hear from the FFF on the question of the compensation linked to the release of their coach."

Blanc was a member of France's 1998 World Cup and 2000 European Cup winning teams. "Blanc proved he was able to be in charge at club level. But coaching a national team is a different job," said current French manager Raymond Domenech. The French federation is expected to make their official announcement on Thursday.

Beckham Still Determining Role For England In South Africa

Despite being ruled out for Fabio Capello's squad due to injury, David Beckham has been offered a coaching position by the Italian manager. No word on what Beckham's precise role would be but the former captain described the offer as an "honor."

Beckham holds the record for caps for an outfield player with 115 but his hopes for playing in a fourth-straight World Cup were ended due to an Achilles injury while playing for AC Milan.

Beckham has been focusing on his duties as vice president for England's 2018 World Cup bid. He presented England's bid book to FIFA last week where he discussed his new role. "To represent them off the field is something new, and something special and something I'm enjoying," he said.

Clinton Backs USA Bid

Former-president of the United States Bill Clinton has been named honorary chairman of the U.S. 2018/2022 World Cup bid. The U.S. is competing with nine other nations to host one of the two World Cup bids to be awarded Dec. 2.

Clinton was president during USA 94, the last time the U.S. hosted the World Cup. "In my travels around the world - from the dirt fields of Lusaka, Zambia, to playgrounds in schools across America - I've seen the transformative power soccer has to bring people together and transform lives on and off the field," said Clinton in a press conference outside the Harlem FC offices.

Dick Advocaat Secures Russian Coaching Job

Dick Advocaat is set to be unveiled as the new coach of the Russian national team, succeeding fellow Dutchman Guus Hiddink. Advocaat resigned last month as Belgium head coach after only six months on the job.

“Advocaat will arrive in Moscow on Tuesday and will be presented to our executive board,” Sergei Fursenko, the Russian FA president said. “His task would be to lead our team to the finals of both Euro 2012 and the 2014 World Cup. He’s a real workaholic. He knows all our [top] players which is a big plus.”

Hiddink will resign his post effective June 30 after failing to guide Russia to the World Cup following a two-legged defeat to Slovenia.

The Football Association was once again rocked by scandal when Lord Treisman, chairman of both the FA and England's 2018 World Cup bid, was forced to resign after the Mail On Sunday published excerpts from a conversation in which Treisman accused Spain and Russia of conspiring to bribe officials in South Africa.

The comments came from a secretly-recorded conversation between Treisman and Mellissa Jacobs, a former aid and romantic partner. Treisman speculated that Russia would assist Spain in bribing the referees to favor the Spanish side during the World Cup. In exchange, Spain, a long shot to hold the 2018 World Cup, would withdraw their bid and switch allegiances to Russia, England's main competition.

"There's some evidence that the Spanish football authorities are trying to identify the referees...and pay them," Triesman allegedly said. "My assumption is that the Latin Americans, although they've not said so, will vote for Spain. And if Spain drop out, because Spain are looking for help from the Russians to help bribe the referees in the World Cup, their votes may then switch to Russia."

The FA allegedly tried to get an injunction against the Mail on Sunday in an attempt to stop the story from being printed but withdrew the injunction after a 90-minute legal battle. "After fully discussing and considering the alleged comments with Lord Triesman, The FA Board accepted his resignation as FA Chairman and Chairman of the World Cup Bid Board with immediate effect," said a statement released by the FA Sunday morning.

The scandal comes just days after David Beckham delivered England's 1,752-page bid book to FIFA outlining their bid for the 2018 tournament.

The turmoil in the FA over recent years and the embarrassment over the inability for the FA to keep Wembley, the marquee football stadium in England, match fit has seriously damaged the country's bid. So what does that mean for the other countries involved in the bidding process? It has been all but confirmed by FIFA that the 2018 tournament will be held in Europe with four countries in the running. England and Russia are the front runners while joint bids from Spain/Portugal and Belgium/Netherlands are considered dark horses. Russia has come on to the international stage by successfully hosting a Champion's League final in 2008 and serious backing from their government bolsters their legitimacy . Working against Russia is the lack of a strong domestic league and the sheer size of the country would make it difficult for teams to travel from venue to venue.

If England fails the country that would receive the biggest boost to their bid would be the USA. FIFA has not awarded consecutive World Cup's to countries that share a common language since the 70's. With football growing exponentially outside of the traditional hubs South America and Europe it seems unlikely FIFA will grant two-straight cups to countries who are so culturally similar. But the USA offers a bid that warrants no additional stadiums or upgrades to infrastructure. USA 94 set attendance records despite the country having no professional league and a national team that was eliminated in the second round.

Australia's bid has lost a lot of its momentum with the revelation three new stadiums would need to be built and stark opposition from other Australian sports leagues. After the constant worries during the buildup in South Africa over stadium completion and viability of infrastructure FIFA will be wary of any countries with a lot of work still to do before the tournament starts.

Qatar, once considered an extreme long shot, is now one of the front runners due to public backing by FIFA President Phil Blatter. "The Arabic world deserves a World Cup," said Blatter on a recent trip to the Middle East. Qatar's main stumbling block is the extreme heat during the summer months. The average temperature is over 40°C (104°F) during June and July. Bid officals have revealed technology that would be outfitted to their stadiums that can lower the temperature by 20°C to make the heat bearable for players and fans. Qatar, with a population of only 1.3 million, would be by far the smallest nation to host a FIFA World Cup but has the wealth and resources to handle the massive influx of people.

Japan and South Korea submitted separate bids for 2022 despite being co-hosts in 2002. It would be a massive surprise if either of the Asian nations received the tournament because of how recently they hosted the tournament. Japan's bid relied on the additional stadiums that would be built as part of Tokyo's 2016 Olympic bid. With Tokyo failing to secure the Olympic games it is unlikely the Japanese government would give the Japanese bid the financial backing it needs to sway FIFA voters. South Korea is in a similar position with not enough stadiums and not enough money to build new ones.

Even if England weathers this public relation hailstorm and secures the 2018 bid the USA would still be considered a front runner in the race for 2022 due to the emergence of the sport and the immense potential for financial gain for FIFA. But Blatter's constant desire to use the World Cup as a way to introduce the sport to areas of the globe that have no embraces football fully yet gives hope to countries like Qatar and Australia. FIFA's decision on the location for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cup's will be revealed this December.

Below is a list of teams with some quality players which will unfortunately miss the World Cup next summer:

Ireland- The Irish team may not be the most talented to miss out on qualification but certainly was unjustly eliminated by France. The Ireland squad is not as deep as other but has talented players such as Aiden McGeady who plays as a winger and/or forward for Celtic. The Irish can also count on the goals of experienced scorer Robbie Keane and the consistency of goalkeeper Shay Given. The team is coached by the shrewd Italian Giovanni Trapattoni who has won league titles in a number of countries.

Mali- the African nation boasts Frederic Kanoute who scores regularly for Sevilla, Mohamed Sissoko who is the Juventus midfield general and Barcelona's Seydou Keita who has already scored six goals in 10 league games. Mali may not have the football pedigree of the likes of Egypt, Cameroon and Nigeria when it comes to Africa football but with the aforementioned players and Real Madrid's Mahamadou Diarra can certainly form a well acclaimed side.

Russia- The team includes Arsenal's Andrei Arshavin and Chelsea's Yuri Zhirkov but failed in the play-off stage against Slovenia after losing on the away goal rule. The Russians won 2-1 at home only to lose 1-0 in Slovenia. Arshavin is one of the most entertaining players when he is at his best.

Bosnia- The Portuguese were missing Cristiano Ronaldo and yet were able to overcome the Bosnians after two identical 1-0 wins. The Bosnia- & Herzegovina team has quite the the talent with names such as Edin Dzeko, Vedad Ibisevic, Zlatan Muslimovic and Zvjezdan Misimovic. The Bosnians were beaten by a more experienced team with the likes of Ricardo Carvalho, Pepe, Deco, Nani and Simao. The Bosnians formed an entertaining and high-scoring team which ironically failed to find the net against Portugal. (Please refer to a previous article dated November 5, 2009 and titled Will Portugal Overcome Bosnia Without Ronaldo for more coverage on this topic)

Sweden- The World Cup next summer will not feature one of the most gifted big man in the shape of striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The Barcelona forward has audacious talent considering his size and has so far notched seven goals in just nine la Liga games for the Catalan club. Ibrahimovic was one of the main reasons behind Inter's domestic domination in Italy prior to his summer move to Barca.

Egypt- Egypt receives a mention because of two hotly contested matches with Algeria which occurred in a space of four days. The two countries are the only ones to play each other three times during the World Cup qualifiers to determine which side makes it to South Africa. The team from the land of the Pharaohs was able to beat Algeria 2-0 in Cairo to force a play-off match in Sudan which was ultimately won by Algeria 1-0. The team is led by Al-Ahly's star player Mohamed Aboutrika and counts on the goals of striker Amr Zaki who played for one season with Wigan Athletic (On loan last season). Other notable names include Mohamed Zidan who plays for German side Borussia Dortmund and Ahmed Hossam Mido (who played in England and has not featured in the recent matches for Egypt).

The other national teams which will be missing on South Africa 2010 do not contain the same star-name appeal though the likes of Togo (which boasts Manchester City's Adebayor), Morocco and Tunisia failed to qualify from Africa while in Europe all the big guns have qualified after the France-Ireland fiasco. The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, England and Spain have all booked their place in next summer's World Cup.

Portugal managed to beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 in Lisbon in their first leg. With Cristiano Ronaldo ruled out of the tie through injury the Portuguese had to rely on the likes of Simao Sabrosa, Liedson and Deco for their creative spark but all three were guilt of below-par performances. It was Manchester United winger Nani who created the spark for Portugal's only goal - his cross was headed home by Bruno Alves in the 31st minute.

Before the home side opened the scoring Bosnia had been happy to defend but after going behind they carved out some great chances and were unlucky not to level matters. They rattled the woodwork four times in search of an equaliser and they should go into the second leg on home soil in full-confidence.

The stand-out tie when the fixtures were drawn was the Republic of Ireland's play-off with France. Last night's game at Croke Park was a fairly cautious affair in all honesty with the French dominating possession though chances for both sides were few and far between. The Irish nearly opened the scoring through Stoke City's Liam Lawrence but his shot was diverted past the post after a crucial block from Patrice Evra. The French managed to force a breakthrough in the second-half when Nicolas Anelka's shot was deflected beyond Shay Given. Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni remains confident his side can emerge victorious after the second leg in Paris on Wednesday but it will be a massive task for the Irish and the French have to be considered firm-favourites with their one goal advantage to reach the World Cup next summer.

Russia managed to take the advantage in their play-off with Slovenia by beating them 2-1 in Russia. Everton winger Diniyar Bilyaletdinov got both goals for Russia who were made to work hard by the visitors. Slovenia managed to halve the deficit with just two minutes of normal time remaining thanks to substitute Nejc Pecnik who grabbed a vital away goal. Pecnik's strike does give Slovenia a great chance to cause an upset ahead of the second leg in Maribor.

The tie between Greece and the Ukraine in Athens ended goalless, meaning the Ukraine should probably now be considered favourites with home advantage for the second leg. It was a tight affair between the two sides and despite good chances for Greece's Theofanis Gekas and the Ukraine's Ruslan Rotan neither side could break the deadlock.

The second legs take place on Wednesday with France, Bosnia, Ukraine and Slovenia enjoying home advantage.

We got another edition of World Cup Buzz Top 5. This time we're going to breakdown the 5 best national team coaches right now. These 5 men have led their charges to surprise heights in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup or in some cases right on the door step of reserving their place in South Africa. So let's get down to the WCB Top 5.

5: REINALDO RUEDA - HONDURAS COACH

The native of Cali, Colombia is the leader of possibly Honduras' golden age of international football. Los Catrachos qualified for their 1st World Cup since Spain 1982. Rueda has had great success with Colombia's youth teams, leading Los Cafeteros to a 3rd place finish in the '03 FIFA World Youth Championship and 4th place in the '03 U-17 World Cup. Its time to give Rueda his due a skillful tactician and excellent personnel manager.

4: MARCELO BIELSA - CHILE COACH

The Argentine coach eats, breathes, and sleeps football. A quirky coach known to take his own pitch measurements before putting out his starting formation. He has turned Chile into the 2nd biggest surprise in South American qualifying and has Chile in South Africa 2010. Considering what has happened to Argentina since Bielsa left, his coaching acumen cannot be underestimated.

3: FABIO CAPELLO - ENGLAND COACH

Fabio Capello has won trophies at some of the biggest club teams in the world: Real Madrid, AC Milan, Juventus. His first foray as a national team coach has started off well. He hasn't won any trophies with England but he's turned England into a serious contender. Before his arrival, England was struggling, looked sloppy, and were in disarray. Capello has organized the team and brought confidence to The Three Lions while leading them to a place in South Africa with a near perfect qualifying record.

2: DUNGA - BRAZIL COACH

His birth name is Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri but he's better known as Dunga. The Brazil coach was much criticized early in his Seleção tenure for the team's style of play but he's turned that sentiment around with a Copa America & Confederations Cup trophy. He's managed to check massive egos of star players for the cause of Brazil team glory and the result: Top spot in the toughest qualifying region in the world. Its one thing to have talent, its another to manage it and put it a position to win and Dunga has done that in arguably the most pressure packed national team job in the world.

1: GUUS HIDDINK - RUSSIA COACH

The Dutchman's accomplishments are impressive at the club level but his magic as a national team coach is irresistible. The last 3 World Cups he's taken his team into at least the 2nd round with 4th place finishes twice with Netherlands in 1998 and South Korea in 2002. Russia will qualify for 2010 and Hiddink has them looking primed for a deep run in South Africa. If a nation needs a man to lead the national team to the World Cup and make a deep & historic run than Guus Hiddink is that man.

There you have it, the best national team managers/coaches in the world. What do you think, did we leave anyone off? These men will be front & center in less than a year when The Great Tournament will capture the world's attention. One of these men could be national heroes if their sides lift The World Cup.

Let's begin Part II of our analysis of bidders for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup with a surprise entrant whose deep pockets could sneak in and win the right to host a World Cup.

QATAR

The oil-rich nation with plentiful natural gas reserves would become the 1st Arab nation to host a World Cup. According to the CIA World Factbook, Qatar has the highest per capita income in the world so the money to build new stadiums and renovate current stadiums to FIFA standards is there. In the capital of Doha, there is a revolutionary underground stadium scheduled to be complete in 2010. The plans are the coolest for a stadium ever seen, imagine WC Matches played there. WOW!. The question is will they have enough clout in FIFA to win the vote?

Outlook: A longshot but undoubtedly the most intriguing of the bidding nations. 2022 is their best bet.

RUSSIA

The world's largest country placed its bid knowing that the sheer size of the country presents big infrastructure problems. Russia is much like England in that Moscow has a ton of stadiums like London does. Russia's stadiums would need upgrade and organizers would have to keep the matches west of the Ural Mountains to avoid Siberia & the time zones. Earlier talk of the English FA backing Russia's Euro 2016 in exchange for Russia dropping its 2018 WC bid is dead.

Outlook: Worthy of consideration but won't get 2018 or 2022.

Bids from Asia & Europe have been made and now let's take a look at the 2 CONCACAF nations that could host the tournament.

MEXICO

History could be on the side of Mexico when it comes to their bid at becoming the only nation to host 3 World Cups. 1970 WC was Pele's last and 1986 WC was the Maradona Show, that might not mean as much as the new stadiums being built by Mexican league teams. Chivas, Monterrey, Santos, Cruz Azul are among the clubs building new stadiums. 1994 was the last time a CONCACAF nation hosted a World Cup, 2018 may be the year to bring it back.

Outlook: Major contender, #2 contender of nations outside of Europe. Previous magical World Cups favor Mexico.

UNITED STATES

The host of the 1994 World Cup has been the land of booming stadiums since Brazil defeated Italy on PKs in the final. It seems like every team in a major sport in the States has a new stadium or arena. There are no real weaknesses other than not having much clout amongst the FIFA Executive Committee. Suggestion: Play the final at FedEx Field its the largest stadium in the NFL (90K+ capacity), its close to D.C. (the U.S. capital), and the Rose Bowl is played out as the centerpiece stadium of sports in the U.S. Also, the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium.

Outlook: Fierce contender, #1 contender of nations outside of Europe, slight edge over Mexico because of the quality of the infrastructure and the stadiums.

Well there it is. Let's us know what you think about the nations mentioned and if you can think of any other nations worthy of consideration. We are aware that China & Japan are in the mix so let's see what happens with their bids. Despite their history, a China/Japan joint bid would be interesting. Tell us what you think.
