Poll: Who Will Advance From World Cup Group A?

by The Gaffer on December 14, 2009

Who do you think will advance from Group A in the 2010 World Cup? It’s a very tough group featuring four excellent countries. South Africa, as host, will have a lot of pressure on them to advance. France will be the most hated team in the World Cup as people around the globe will be rooting for them to lose after the Ireland debacle. Uruguay should never be underestimated, and Mexico definitely has the talent to advance far in this tournament.

Cast your vote for which two teams you think will advance from Group A in the poll above, and post your comments below.

Sorry readers, but I really think South Africa are going to advance from this group. It’s extremely rare for the host country not to advance. But if South Africa does advance, who doesn’t advance from this group? Would it be Mexico, France or Uruguay?

Cheers,

Mexico and France are talented teams but the problem with France is the coach who is one of the least qualified to take charge of a leading football team. In addition France will be under scrutiny if any decision goes the way of its players after Thierry Henry’s clear handball.
The Mexicans have talent but tend to underperform. After a slow start, Mexico emerged strong in the qualifiers. Mexico will likely go through.
This leaves Uruguay as the weak link. South Africa will be cut some slack considering the host nation often gets calls to go its way.

I am almost positive that mexico and France are the two strongest teams in group A but lets not forget that south Africa is the host and Uruguay is also a threat. France is the 2nd best team in the world according to the 2006 world cup but they will be under a lot of pressure because of the qualifying hand ball by thierry henry. mexico is also a very strong team because the finished 2nd in the north american qualifiers.they also won the gold cup and are on a winning streak. South Africa is the host and the host rarely doesn’t pass the first round.Uruguay finish last in the south american qualifiers but is still a good team.

2006 has nothing to do with it unless they can get Makelele, Zidane, and Thuram back.

I agree that Mexico and France will probably pass to next round .

South Africa will likely be the first host nation to not make the 2nd round. If you recall, SA had to play WC qualifiers (first time a host nation had to do so) in order to qualify for African Cup. AND IT COULDN’T EVEN ADVANCE OUT OF THE WC QUALIFIERS, making the first and possibly last host nation to host WC that it didn’t even qualify for. When Japan and South Korea hosted the WC, they were lucky to have the weaker Euro/American nations in their groups so both advanced. But not this time for South Africa, which is in a tough group.
