In the summer of 1990, New Order’s “World In Motion” was the anthem that was blaring out of car radios, boomboxes and stereos across England. It was New Order’s only number one single in England, but what a song it was. It captured the mood and spirit felt in England that summer as the world seemed like it was in motion watching England triumphantly succeed in the 1990 World Cup only to fall at nearly the last hurdle on penalties against Germany in the semi-final.
In the song, John Barnes rapped about England’s chances. Now, 20 years later, Barnes has returned to the mic and has cut an extended version of his rap for all to see (view the video above).
