Ladies & Gentlemen get your Euros, Dollars, Pounds or credit cards ready because on February 20th the first phase for purchasing tickets for The Great Tournament will begin. An estimated 3 million tickets will be made available with South Africans being allowed to buy the cheaper category 4 tickets – which constitute 15 percent of the total. Category 4 tickets for the South African public range from $20 USD for a group stage match to $150 USD for the final. FIFA is also planning to distribute around 120,000 complimentary tickets to South Africans, courtesy of a newly established ticket fund.

According to FIFA, The 32 participating member associations will be offered 12% of the purchasable tickets for each of their matches in the group phase and an average of 8% in the knockout phases. Tickets that are not bought by various stakeholders such as FIFA member associations will be put on sale to the general public. The ticket distribution system will be finalized at a later stage, with the internet playing a major but not an exclusive role. The first set of tickets will be sold in host cities at airport terminals and online.

Despite all the negative publicity surrounding South Africa’s ability to host the 2010 World Cup, Local Organising Committee media manager Jermaine Craig said that the money making hospitality packages targeting local and international corporations have sold “”way beyond expectation” with more than 50,000 packages bought by various businesses, which is a “much faster pace than sales for the 2006 championship in Germany”. FIFA and 2010 World Cup organizers can hold up this news as a sign that South Africa will produce a profitable and successful World Cup.
