ESPN’s 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

All 32 Nations ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

ESPN have recently released their brilliant advertising campaign for this summer’s World Cup in the form of creatively designed artistic murals. 33 in total, all 32 nations are represented with the above placed South Africa World Cup mural to highlight what’s to come. Continuing reading after the break to view each nation’s unique and colorful mural. Visit the official Facebook site to download each one of the murals as you anxiously await June, 11th.

Algeria ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Wolves howl in a South African dusk as the Algerian team celebrates a potential group stage victory over England or the US as a rabid nation looks on excitedly.

Argentina ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The MESSIah like Lionel Messi steams toward goal as a proud nation remembers earlier victories claiming the world title in ’78 and ’86. Can a once proud son lead La Albiceleste and the current best footballer on the planet to another title on 2010?

Australia ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The Aussies made a good show of themselves in 2006 and will look to build upon that respectable performance when Tim Cahill and Co battle what looks to be one of the groups of death featuring Germany, Serbia and Ghana.

Brazil ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The once star of the national team looks to carry the weight of enormous expectations of Brazil and may even be celebrating a bit early. Hey, there’s even a bikini in the audience.

Cameroon ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Samuel Eto’o and the rest of the lion-esque Cameroon squad will look to thrive on the fact they’ll be on their home continent come this June. The goal-scoring Eto’o has just come fresh of a treble winning domestic season with Inter Milan and will look to keep his good form with his country.

Chile ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The Chileans are quick and will most likely play 3 at the back. They’ll be exciting to watch when they commit that many players forward. Their group stage clash with Spain is sure to delight.

Denmark ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Olsen’s Eleven, very clever take on the heist film. Martin Olsen and Denmark are a European side not to be underestimated. They finished first in their group ahead of Portugal, Sweden and Hungary. A group stage match up with fellow European representatives the Netherlands looks set to be a good one.

England ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Rooney, Gerrard and the rest of the England players look to finally impress on the world stage and add another W next to the year 1966. 2010 may just be England’s best chance to “bring football home” with the brilliant Fabio Capello at the helm.

France ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Will Les Bleus over-achieve like they did in 2006 or under-achieve like they did in 2002? Is Raymond Domenech really the right man to mold all that incredible French talent? We’ll soon find out.

Germany ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • What a photo. They’re now without their Captain and leader Michael Ballack, but one should never underestimate the mighty Germans. Calling on greats from Germany’s past, Ballack will hopefully pass on his leadership role to another as Germany looks for glory in South Africa.

Ghana ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Another vitally important player that will miss out because of injury, Michael Essien carries not only the flag, he carried Ghana’s best chance of making an important run in South Africa. Ghana will look to avenge their loss in the final of the 2010 African Cup of Nations to Egypt as they play their second major tournament on the continent this year.

Greece ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Onward the Greeks! They figured out modern civilization and a way to win Euro 2004, can they figure out how to get out of their group this summer?

Honduras ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • They may have erected a statue of American defender Jonathan Bornstein in Tegucigalpa, but the Hondurans didn’t get to South Africa by the head of Bornstein. Honduras have a difficult group stage run having to face Spain, Chile and Switzerland. They’ll want to represent their nation and CONCACAF well, but will need to be at their best.

Italy ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Defending Champions are never easy to eliminate — just ask Inter Milan about Barcelona. The Italians aren’t being picked by many to repeat which could ultimately benefit the notoriously slow starting Europeans. They’d love nothing more than to fly under the radar to the quarter and semi finals only to shut down the opposition en route to another final.

Ivory Coast ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Cote d’ Ivoire led by the brilliant Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou and the brothers Toure are another African nation that will look to impress with former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson at the helm. They’ll attack with purpose and defend bravely. Surely a dark horse for many making predictions.

Japan ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • One of my favorite murals from the lot of them, this brilliant depiction of a classic Japanese striker-samurai shredding and slicing through rival nations while continuing to hold up the ball is a treat.

Mexico ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • El Tri will look to build upon the turn around of sorts they enjoyed when current boss Javier Aguirre took over from the lackluster Swed Sven-Goran Ekirsson. They also came out on the short end of a meeting with England but impressed with their speed and passing abilities.

Netherlands ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The flying Dutchmen anyone? Many a football fans second favorite team, the Dutch always play their positive brand of attacking football and could be a favorite to win the title if they can avoid a classic meltdown in later stages.

New Zealand ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The lone qualifier from Oceania, New Zealand will face three difficult group stage matches and will be facing a miracle if they advance. Great photo though.

Nigeria1 ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • The fantastic Super Eagles will look to soar high above their opponents led by Obafemi Martins, the experienced Kanu, and Mikel John Obi. Like the other African nations competing, Nigeria have the advantage of playing together as a team in the 2010 African Cup of Nations earlier this year where they made the semi final.

North Korea ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • If Cape Verde can hold fellow group G participants Portugal to a 0–0 draw, you better believe the organized and defensively minded North Koreans can do the same. On paper, they should exit the group stages with 0 points, but don’t underestimate North Korea being difficult to break down.

Paraguay ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • They finished ahead of Argentina in the difficult CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying group which proves Paraguay possess some quality. Led by Nelson Valdez, Paraguay will be a strong South American team that should progress out of group F with Italy.

Portugal ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • There seems to be some questions surrounding this Portugal team as they enter into June. One doesn’t get a sense of confidence when watching them especially after leaving qualifying late. Still though, with players like Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani, Portugal can’t be over-looked and are always dangerous.

Serbia ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Serbia posses a strong starting eleven featuring the likes of Nemanja Vidic, Neven Subotic and Dejan Stankovic. They’re big, strong and will look to avenge their first round exit from 2006.

Slovakia ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Having qualified for their first finals, Slovakia will face Italy and Paraguay in the group stages. Their best chance for a meaningful result will be when they clash against New Zealand. Looks cold.

Slovenia ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Could that bear be the England National team? I’m not so sure, but the Eastern Europeans will look to slay the USA and Algeria in hopes they can make it out of the group for a potential round of 16 match up v Germany.

South Africa ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • This proud African nation gets the distinct pleasure of hosting the first World Cup on African soil, but will South Africa get the not so distinct pleasure of being the first host nation to not advance from the group stages?

South Korea ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • South Korea seem to always make a good show of themselves in the World Cup. 2002 and that incredible run to the semi finals wasn’t so long ago. With another quick attacking squad, South Korea would love nothing more than to repeat their results in 2002.

Spain ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Fernando Torres slaying Brazil, Germany and Italy for their first World Cup title? Not so sure, but Spain seem to be odds on favorite to do just that. There may not be a better passing team out of the 32 and a potential final v Brazil could be one of the best ever.

Switzerland ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • If I’m not mistaken, Switzerland didn’t concede a single goal last time out, yet they failed to progress out of the group stages. Can the Swiss bolster their defensive squad with a little flair and some goals in 2010?

Uruguay ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

  • Uruguay are one of only seven nations to actually win the Cup when they did it first time out in 1930 and proved it was no fluke by accomplishing it again in 1950. Having fallen a long way since those glory days, Uruguay haven’t progressed to the round of 16 since 1990 and failed to even qualify in 2006.

USA ESPNs 2010 FIFA World Cup Murals

Depicting a dramatic scene from the Revolutionary War when the USA defeated the British, the Yanks will hope to defeat them, well at least the English, when they face England in one of the most important opening group stage matches the USA has ever played. Many will be watching.

Feel free to leave any comments about the incredible murals in the comments section below.

Marvellous…simply marvellous….kudos to you my friend…this is what the world cup is all about…showing the strengths and traditions of all the participating nations with respect….unlike the espn writer who wrote 32 teams in 32 days….the fiesta starts in 13 days….fellow americans pls enjoy the games from the begining, watch the players sing their national anthems with pride…imagine the multitudes following and praying for them…. the agony of defeat the joy of victory..thats what its all about….wars will temporarily stop and even terrorists will grudgingly take a break from their mayhem to salute the sons of 32 nations in battle.

Would love to buy these. Anyone know if ESPN or the agency that created them will eventually put them out on the market for sale?

I was at a bar to watch the USA v England match and someone was handing these posters out. I managed to nab the awesome South Korea poster.

I’m pretty sure the Slovenia ‘slaying the bear’ is a reference to defeating Russia in the playoffs.

I could be wrong, but I would bet that the “wolves” in the Algeria mural are actually foxes. The Algeria NT is nicknamed “Les Fennecs”, a Fennec is a type of fox in North Africa.

The lone qualifier from Oceania, New Zealand will face three difficult group stage matches and will be facing a miracle if they advance. Great photo though.

The Aussies made the final 32 as well.

Australia qualified through Asia.

Eddie,
That is correct geographically, but not true when it comes to qualifying. Australia now qualifies through the Asian federation, not Oceania.

Good murals but I have a complaint. The Serbian mural has 2 clear mistakes. Why are the background colors blue, white and red, instead of red, blue and white? This isn’t Yugoslavia. Also Kosovo is not apart of Serbia for some unapparent reason in the mural.

The Serbia poster is DISGRACEFUL for playing up on sensitive political issues (the incorrect flag colours and the inappropriate border outline used) I AM A SERBIA FAN BUT WOULD NOT HESITATE TO RIP IT IF I CAME ACROSS IT.

Poor form ESPN.

All of them are rubbish, full of silly clichés and stereotyping…

Like the bikini girl in the Brazilian one, and the outdated “Seleção Canarinho” banner, when that name is rarely used in Brazil nowadays, etc…

The Serbia mural is nothing but a insult to all Serbs, if i had the artist or the people responsible in front of me they’d be eating that poster literally.

24 Petar Iz Kraljina May 29, 2010 at 3:23 am

I fully agree with the other Serbian posters. Im not suprised tho as ESPN is American owned and not only are Americans poor in geography (map and flag colour), but clearly have their own political agendas that need to be furfilled (Pro Albanian).

Love the fact that ESPN doesnt know shit about geografy. Kosovo is still part of Serbia and it isnt the independent country. They dont have the chair in the UN because of that “little thing” called internationaly recognized country. People hate America because of things like this

Love the other posters

maybe Kosovo don’t have a seat at UN, but Kosovo is Indepedent country. if you don’t know Kosovo is a part of World bank. at 2012 Kosovo have to play for eliminator’s for WC Brazil 2014. Serbian’s you must agree with reality. Kosovo is not part of Serbija.

Reply

31 Markus May 30, 2010 at 3:12 am

I love all the poster. I think ESPn did a good job of even recognizing the seoson of the World Cup 2010. I would do some changes in some of the poster but they look cool. The Japan is awesome one of my favorite, also Spain. They could have done a better job on the Brazil one. But after winning the WC2010SA, it will be like a slap in the face for ESPN.

Reply

32 Fabrizio May 30, 2010 at 11:26 am

Haha WOW! I can not believe how offended people are getting about the Serbia poster.

These are all meant to be funny and artistic ways of promoting the World Cup, primarily within the United States (ESPN is located in the USA, people)

The Serbian colors are switched so that it looks like the wings of the bird, as someone else has already pointed out.

As far as Kosovo is concerned, let’s face it, the WHOLE WORLD is split on this issue. ESPN is portraying the artwork through the USA’s stance, considering it is an AMERICAN COMPANY.

There is no offense intended, and it’s ridiculous that Serbs would be upset at Americans because of something silly like this, that is used to market the World Cup domestically. It’s not a political statement, it’s just addressing the sensitivities of the issue and going with the status-quo within the very country in which the art is produced. I’m sure if it was marketed in Serbia, ESPN would have done it differently.

American people have no problems with Serbs. Let’s at least get that straight.

Reply

33 Darko June 1, 2010 at 8:23 am

I agree, and really don’t care whether US (ESPN, to be exact) thinks Kosovo is a part of Serbia or not. But I do have a problem with the fact that, apart from posters of Honduras and Netherlands, no other country has it’s map depicted. They could put Zigic on a football field or something, rather than “standing” on a map.

I don’t think they had bad intentions… but still, it’s pretty dumb move.

Reply

34 Vladimir June 1, 2010 at 12:18 pm

Would you be offended if someone shows your country without Sicily or Lombardia? I think you would. I guess you’re Italian because of name.

Reply

35 Fabrizio June 3, 2010 at 11:21 am

Vladimir- I would not care of a depiction of Italy without Sicily, but maybe that is because I am from the north!! (kidding)

In all truth, we do not have disputed territories. I agree that it would have been wise to not include a map with Serbia. My point is only that the intentions are not likely malicious, and I am appalled at all of the USA-hate from Serbs on here. I have lived in America, and Americans do not have any problem with Serbs- they simply supported their government’s Balkan policy under Clinton (ultimately to prevent mass killings and ethnically driven genocide), but I think MOST of the world did too!!!!

Reply

36 Annie May 31, 2010 at 3:15 pm

Hahaha… there’s no way they planned that “withe wings”, its a mistake, they saw that in some old book and now they r trying to make things right. Cause, if they planned it, they would put red first… they r just uneducated… And map… thats very slippery ground, cause even if 1/4, 1/3 of the countries of the world recognize Kosovo’s independence, until UN officially recognize it, it’s not independent. Again, ether they just google serbia’s map and put it, or, god forbid, they did it just to provoke… I just think they done very poor job getting right information…

but, if they knew they were on slippery ground, they’ve shouldnt put map in the first place

Great insight onto each team… and I love these posters. But one (interesting) detail you’re missing is what the New Zealand poster is depicting. They are doing the Haka-Pa, a reincarnation of a native tribal ritual performed by the All Blacks (the national rugby team) before a match. It’s a really cool ritual meant to psych-out opponents.

Someone should fix this Serbian mural.
Kosovo is part of Serbia and it should be on that map. And one question, why did you put map of Serbia on this mural? Some other countries are represented without map and just because of Kosovo you could kick map out and there would not be any problems. Flag.. i cant believe it that you have put a wrong flag. And this star at Belgrade just says that you have took some old map and infos. Serbia is not communist country anymore and star should not be there. I dont know who i need to contact to fix this. I would help them to make a new mural… Its really important for us Serbs to fix this..

Little help for ESPN. After you have bad about geography and culture of a country (refer to the image that promotes my country) I decided to give you little help.Kosovo is an integral part of Serbia, and Kosovo, but if you view the picture as an independent state, could and Vojvodina to display (Kosovo and Vojvodina autonomous province within Serbia, such as USA has its own republic, Texas, Illinois). And you put the flag of a country that no longer exists.
http://www4.slikomat.com/10/0601/ckr-za-ESP.jpg – Thus it should look like.
Thank you for your attention and I hope that you will correct the mistake =)

What wrong with serbian mural? Many things: 1. flag of the SFRJ, that is former yugoslav flag, we are not a communists, thank’s God for that; 2. Kosovo i Metohija is part of serbian state, only few countrys recognized Kosovo as ” indenpendent” state. This mural is political propaganda against Serbian country and people. But, all world know that Americans don’t know nothing about geography, they are naturaly stupid, with IQ lower than body temperature. After this is ESPN, USA station, we know that is will happend, because Americans only now to kill people for all over the world. Fuck USA, fuck Americans, fuck EU.

That flag is not incorrect …. Just because it is drawn vertically instead of horizontally does not mean that its a wrong flag. If you just rotate that flag 90′ counterclock wise, its a perfect flag. C’mon now ppl, its a graphic design.

In response to the angry Serbians, I have a few points to make.

First, it is possible that the flag colors were switched purely because of graphic design constraints. Having a red jersey against a red background stands out significantly less than having it on blue.

Secondly, it is common on many American maps to use a star to indicate the capital city. This does not insinuate Communism, it just helps it to stand out.

I’m not saying that these are the reasons, or defending the artist if they were deliberate attacks on Serbia, I’m just trying to offer up some other explanations.

Finally, to commenters like Mladen, it is entirely uncalled for to use this to generalize hatred towards Americans. Not all of us are “naturaly stupid, with IQ lower than body temperature”. It’s incredibly offensive and rude; I wouldn’t dare presume something like that about another culture. Not all of us are bloodthirsty warmongers, either. Please don’t accuse Americans of being ignorant and then make stereotyped judgments about us.

Reply

80 SerbiaFan June 1, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Actually, it would be best to NOT include political issues regardless of which side. The other posters came out fine with a bit of humor but also national pride. The Serbia one deliberately played up on two political issues. Why not instead make the player depicted (tallest in this world cup) a giraffe or some like that. A bit of humor instead so we can all have a laugh and enjoy the beautiful game.

Again, poor form by ESPN and the designers.

Reply

85 Brad June 1, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Wow, it looks like we all learned what the hot-button issue is for the Serbs, eh? It’s just a poster, make your own if you don’t like it. This is like in ’94, McDonalds put all the competitors’ flags on their cups, and Saudi Arabians pissed and whined because you’re not supposed to put their flag on disposable items because it contains a religious message… I say the same thing to the Serbs now: just quit your damn whining! We get it already. Why cry over something that some dude made in a country that isn’t your own? Like in ’94 Cupgate, the poster painter wasn’t trying to offend you.

Political boundaries aside, Kosovo doesn’t even have a team, and Kosovars would be eligable to play for Serbia but most (depending on ethnicity) would rather not play for Serbia. However it is worth noting that Valon Behrami was born in Kosovo and he ofcourse will be playing for Switzerland at the world cup. He moved there when he was like 10 or so, same with Blerim Dzimialli but i don’t think he made the Swiss final roster.

You TV watcher, read now what youll not see at your TV.

Albanians never lived at Kosovo.
About 2nd W.W. Serbs were forced to leave their homes at Kosovo. Lot of them were literallty pushed to trucks and driven far away, their lands confiscated.
Noone asks Albanians to be in our country, let them back to their own jail country, same way they came here.
Who brought Albanians there – now it is obvious – the nation which has military base in Europe now, which destroyed Indians and took their lands, tried same to Vietnam (thanks God they failed). Who is the next ?

After 2nd W.W. Serbs which remained at Kosovo were terorized constantly, lot of them killed – thats what you never seen at your TV, neither we did, our politician who tried to help own people were being destroyed (jails, sudden deads, etc.).

All brainless war moves made bu Slobodan Miloševi? were ordered by Americans, if you believe or not.

What happens now here ? Americans manipulates by our nowdays goverment too, whatever they want. We have new ID cards with Statue of Liberty, and have to take it all of us. We voted for that goverment, didnt know what will be, and Im sure silly people will vote for them again.
Americans took part of our country, and obviously they want more.

I’ve learned a lot by reading these comments and I understand how serious it is to the Serbians and I’m sure the US government has some political stance for it because the US government has an opinion on everything.

However, I fail to see why anyone would think this would be such a serious issue to the average American that we would sneak a political message into a promotional poster for the world cup. This will sound offensive but it’s the honest truth: Serbia is not North Korea. Serbia is not Israel. Serbia is not Iraq or Afghanistan. The average American public has more pressing matters on their minds. You can insult and attack America but what is it to us? After 9/11, we are very aware of the fact we are not the most popular nation in the world and that many people all over the world dislike us but guys, Americans have more pressing issues on their minds at the moment. To the average American, Serbia and the Kosovo conflict is not something they would have a lot of knowledge about– historically, geographically, politically, etc. The artist probably just made an honest, genuine mistake, and to think that there is some deep, political message to it is absolutely ridiculous.

These are PROMOTIONAL POSTERS FOR THE WORLD CUP. There are thirty-one other posters featuring thirty-one other nations besides Serbia. Several commentators have already made the point that “Americans are stupid, don’t know anything about other nations, etc, etc” so why would you guys expect us to know so much that we would single out Serbia of all nations and give it some political meaning? Don’t think so highly of yourselves and then insult Americans for not knowing anything about you.

By saying Kosovo je serbija and other bullshit you are promoting hate….and fake nationalism. We all know that the Albanians will not leave Kosovo and you guys had a chance to leave in peace with them but you wante to fight just like you did with Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia. Forget about war man…..our economies and goverments are corrupted and we want to take pride in being this or that. We are Illyrians an I’m sure you have Illyrian blood in you too. I agree that the Serbia map and background colors were poorly chosen but I wouldn’t be so quick to blame Americans. It seems to me like most of ESPN’s soccer coverage is British produced. There are lots of British English usages in the descriptions of each poster. Best proof “Uruguay are….” rather than how Americans would say it, “Uruguay is….”.

To Americans commenting on the Serbian mural…believe me, you have no idea what really happened in Kosovo and Metohija in regards to the planned and forced population exodus of the indigenous Serbian population in this, Serbia’s south province. All you have heard and all that you believe was fed to you by the same machinations of media propaganda that have force fed you lies about what your government does for decades. America and NATO members are in the wrong and always will be guilty of their sins in bombing a sovereign nation without UN permission and under false pretenses and ultimatums that no sane country would ever accept. Also, the flagrant violation of international law that America and its client states has committed with the recognition of the separatist Albanian para-state will not stand the test of time and will blow up in their faces. I know it is of no use trying to explain this situation as I am an American of Serbian descent and fully aware that most Americans are trapped within their own self righteous beliefs and secure in their feelings that their government and country overall are sacred and the torch bearers of all that is good in this world. Fellow Serbs, resist the provocations shown on here and everywhere else and continue on with the full knowledge that the case of the Serbian nation and its people is justified by history, cultural and religious monuments, and international laws and treaties…even if they are flagrantly violated by the Land of the Fee and the Home of the Slave. Samo Bog zna da smo u pravu, i to je sve sto je vazno!

There is no need to defend the artists if they are brittish, american, african or whatever its allways the same issue when i see something like this with serbia 70% of the time wrong flag and now without kosovo? Give the serbians a break got dammit, they have already taken alot of shit let people and serbians too enjoy the world cup and the lovely murals, becouse serbia’s would be nice if kosovo was there or without map.

159 Sick of the Serbian Crying June 4, 2010 at 2:22 pm

You know what, the Kosovars say Kosovo is NOT Serbia, so I’ll take their word on it. As someone else said above, what ever happened to self-determination? That’s what most countries were founded upon today. Especially when an ethnic group has been persecuted, I mean, come on people.

I generally agreed with the Serbian posters at first, however, in regard to the political sensitivities that this mural depicted. But all of their comments on here are simply hateful and directed at large general groups (anti-US, anti-EU, etc.). Not to mention people have made simply racist comments about Kosovars and Albanians. Are you Serbs really proud of this behavior? This disregard for humanity and the universal love that the World Cup brings?

If it is truly how you feel, then I have certainly gained a negative image of Serbia. Pretty sad.

Reply

160 critias June 6, 2010 at 10:10 am

So, you’ll take their word for it but not ours? Why? Because all the name calling hurt your feelings? That anger towards the West wasn’t created over night. Remember the war in former Yugoslavia? You don’t, but we do. The first so called “intervention” was executed then by the USA. Remember the bombings in the 1999? You don’t, but we do. It was another “intervention” from the USA. This thing with Kosovo i Metohija was simply the last straw. Who gave you the right to go around the world and invade and bombard countries as you please? How would you feel if you weren’t all that powerful and some country decides to take say Texas, California and Montana from you (and that you can’t take it back using conventional methods because the opposing country is much stronger than you)? That’s roughly 15% of US territory and that’s how much you took from us. Oh, and there is no such thing as a Kosovar; people that live in Kosovo i Metohija are either Albanians, Serbs or Roma. An Albanian from Kosovo i Metohija doesn’t differ from an Albanian that lives in Albania (when someone uses the word Kosovar, they always mean Albanian from Kosovo i Metohija).
You mentioned the phrase “self-determination”. Ok, let’s say we buy that. Why can’t north of Kosovo i Metohija, where the Serb population is a majority, remain with Serbia then? Or why can’t Republika Srpska, a part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, also predominately Serb, join Serbia? What about Nagorno-Karabakh, Kurdistan, Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abkhazia, . . . the list goes on and on. Yet, out of all of these cases, the West exclusively supports Kosovo i Metohija, even though all of these have a far better case when it comes to demanding independence.
Or, let’s put it this way. You’re saying that every ethnic group that’s a minority in a country as a whole but a majority in a particular area, should have the right of self-determination? So, if I gather, say 10-20 buddies of mine and move to a deserted village (Serbia has some of those; not sure about US, though), we can conduct a referendum and proclaim independence? Since we all live there and we’re all for it, it’s a 100% vote. All we need to do is form a governing body to make it official and that’s pretty much it, right? Even though we speak the same language as another country and share every aspect of/with that society, we still get to consider ourselves citizens of another country. And don’t say that there aren’t any countries that are that small (Andorra, Lichtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, etc.).
But there’s another thing to mention here. A funny thing a came across:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state
Look under secession. It appears that you don’t allow your states to secede from USA. And yet you demand that another country willingly give away a part of their own soil. Do as I say, not as I do, eh?

the world cup cup is designed to unite us in the game but some like to bring hate to the game and then they loose the respect of everyone…..I’m Albanian and I would be cheering for Serbia with all my heart but they do not want to live in peace with us….Let’s save politics for later ….US-England 1-1….They worked hard for it….

1) Which one of my statements do you consider hateful? I’m assuming you found some in my post, since you replied to it.
2) Well, you (Albanians) are the ones who seceded in the first place, so you in fact don’t want to live with the Serbs. You say that you want to live in peace and yet some of the Serbian families come back to Kosovo i Metohija, your fellow Albanians throw rocks at them, demolish their place of residence or even shot at them with firearms. If you don’t believe me, I can supply you with the appropriate links.
P. S. Your nick is United Balkan….United Europe…United World. If Kosovo i Metohija ever becomes an actual, UN recognized and approved country, the number of countries in the world will increase, making the world even more divided. So isn’t that a step in the wrong direction?

@Sick of the Serbian Crying
Your post brings up some good points, but it also shows your lack of knowledge.
1. “Kosovars” do not exist as an ethnic people. Kosovo is a region inhabited by Serbs and Albanians. Without getting into too much history, the area was (is) the heart of Serbia and over the centuries, for many reasons, was inhabited by albanians. The situation is tricky because of all the factors and history involved. You cannot simple say, whatever happened to self-determination, it’s much more complex.
Kosovar can refer to geographical peoples living in the region, but not ethnically. Kind of like saying that all people of the world our “Milky Wayers” because we live in the milky way galaxy, but really there’s dozens of ethnicities.
2. Persecution of an ethnic group? You can’t simply blame one people for everything, I am aware that the serbs have done some bad things, but the albanians, among other balkan countries have aswell. It’s pretty darn hard to find a country that hasn’t done anything negative in their history. if you are truly so concerned about the persecution of people then I’d suggest you find out how a once all serb kosovo is now 95% albanian…

In regards to the poster/mural…I am not surprised by the drawings in the sense that they’re drawn by american/british w.e those countries recognize Kosovo, so to them that is the map they use. However, was there really a need to put the largest map on Serbia’s mural? Clearly the artist wanted the Serbian mural to be very political. Knowing the sensitity of the issue, they should’ve excluded the map and drawn other features for Serbia. The colors of the flag are also dissapointing, the designer should’ve made an effort to make the image work with the current flag.
Like I said, because ESPN is american drawing the map without Kosovo is expected, but I don’t think it was necessary. Especially since the fans of Serbia, who should be the ones enjoying and posting the mural all over their facebooks/myspaces etc. will not do so, and Kosovo will never have its internationally recognized team so it was a stupid move by the designer and ESPN.

I thought the whole point of the World Cup was for nations to come together to play football. It should be a time where you can put aside politics and bickering and just play the game. For team, for country.

What looked like an attempt to make Zigic the biggest man in Serbia has obviously touched a nerve. Now I can’t pretend to know the artist’s intentions, but I do know this: If you walk into a room expecting to be disrespected, you will be, because it’s all you’ll be able to hear.

Aside from political ideals, these are clever (like the Swiss!) but quite ugly,
I think. I teach in a high school (languages) and see better artwork from students. These seem to be all computer drawn, and though the colours are bright and interesting the backgrounds are dull and people completely without proportion.

To the guy who is sick of Serbian crying. That is not how most of us feel. And I don’t agree with these guys who spew hate all over the place.

The problem is that the guy who drew the poster did a bad job. It should be changed, not only because of the flag, but because of the map, and these strange birds that are supposed to represent something. Even if we disregard the wrong colours, the insulting map, we still have a problem.

Our NT’s nickname is White Eagles, it’s recognized on FIFA’s website. The guy drew some birds… they look like seagulls, but they might be white doves, or pelicans? … Nobody knows. And nobody knows why they are there.
But eagles they ain’t.

This makes me think that they did zero-to-none research and that they just didn’t care. If they had done at least some research, they wouldn’t have put the map, let alone wrong colours.

And as far as what you believe about Kosovars and their views, it’s completely your problem, and has nothing to do with this disgrace of a poster. There were some comments about war-mongers, sadly friends, you, the Americans, seem to be the biggest and deadliest war-mongers in the World, especially after 9/11. You all supported invasion of Iraq, and look where it got you, and the Iraqis. How many dead? Much, much more than those who died in the Kosovo conflict between us and the illegal KLA that you supported.

But be that as it may, the poster needs to be changed!

Misperceptions abound. Educated Americans like myself do not support the stupid armed conflict that we began in Iraq (though it did remove a vicious dictator). But this is where we differ. We can acknowledge mistakes that partisan fools (Bush) have made. But look at the post right above you! Your fellow Serb calls for terrorism upon America. This is why we all have negative perceptions of your country. While you may be enlightened, people like “marko” have no regard for human life and demonstrate a vicious approach toward humanity.

America has made many mistakes, but there are not Americans wishing death upon others. Many Americans are guilty of IGNORANCE (supporting a war in Iraq without realizing its consequences, for example), but at least they are not guilty of inhumanity, like Marko above.

Makes Serbia look terrible

if the US had to rank the Kosovo-Serbia boundary/sovereignty issue on a scale ranging from “important” to “who cares,” my guess is that it would be awful close to the latter. despite the concerns above, this mural was NOT an american attempt to portray subliminal political messages. the bottom-line, this was an African muralist’s attempt to display the might of a small but resilient country. dont read into the negatives. everyone take a deep breath and remember what this tournament stands for.

American football or handball (how should be called) is very much boooringer with all time outs, stops lasts longer then actual play , it’s dull when one score, there is no joy of net hitting sound like in soccer which lasts in all never more then 2h (hence baseball is out of comparison table, more)

Serbia without Kosovo, why the theft of sovereign Serbian soil (for oil ? alien bases?)), USA and alleged African drawer did this by the command of a masonic US elite, so now why we Serbs shouldn’t react criss-crossingly – bomb the USA over Texas issue for independence, as we do all very well know that a freedom loving people of Texas are being everyday tortured, harassed by NWO police forces NSA, CIA, FBI, DEA ATF.. units are demonstrating overuse of force led by world masonic gay Jezuit elites. Remember Waco blowup! The Oklahoma bombing, and 9/11 , it’s all done by same conspiratory minds who bombed Serbia and now making this deceitful picture with use of an imaginary map, whole american nation must be aware of moves of their dictatorship, dirty leadership who they support going on elections, having to pick between two sides of same medal blues and reds for many decades. Obama is a joke, a puppet like a Bush, the very core of the system is polluted, after 1776 the USa isn’t free country anymore, it’s led by corporate banking systems. They support gay lobbies everywhere whose ideology fit their plans in enslavement of humanity, making people retarded without backbone, kiss assers, look at the Greece photo mural, Phallic WorShipers?! Greece team is made of Panathenacos players the most, which fans are commonly known as Gays 13. So, yes, the gay conspiracy is behind these drawings.Vatican and pope is behind them.. and so to the pyramid top.

I am a Serb, i am offended by this provoking act pointed at the oldest and greatest nation in the world, map is an reflection of an ugly USa inferior mind spectre, albanian flag black eagle virus controls US whiteheaded Eagle’s eye of clear perception. The doves flying over Kosmet make a cynical statement. I may not so mind the reference of Yugoslavia colors flag in the back (it is probably true pun on a current asshole thief criminal known as “Tole” Serbian FA president who is a fan and ex president of small yugoslavian communist croatian club installed in Belgrade, who didn’t invite in a national team any current players from the biggest, best and most popular Serbian team, also RIGging the championship for his scat eating dark side, who has support of a local Gay-bars which are tied with croatian g.pride since 80-s penetrating heavenly Serbian order, being spiritually tied to catholic line of Jezuit Francisians which are advised by Judaic masonry satanists who made Tel Aviv ‘gay pride’ to be held in exact time of opening Ceremony of FIFA WC 2010).

Kosovo and map ESPN issue are one of the triggers which will backfire on american nation when real United Nations of the free world come together forming strong force and judge fairly the fallen occupied land of US, if not literal force of airplanes hovering the lands and nukes of justice, then god’s punishment shell arrive manifested via hurricane nor a biggg sinkhole that will open soon below under swallowing most of central east USA, followed by Yellowstone volcano eruption north west, earthquakes worse then Haiti to southwest. Fact that Texan giants Dallas Cowboys can’t win Super bowl for a very long time is to blame on these power elites rigging the games, hidden rulers seen in agents like Zbignew Brezinsky and Henry Kissinger, or Zionist , Rotschilds, Rockfellers, french Merovingians, Arab oil tycoons. Baseball Texas Rangers didn’t become champions, they are making Texas to become a joke to the rich settled in Washington, truth is that Mexicans crossing there have nothing to do with independence movement, it’s a smoke screen. If Texan Walker, Chuck Norris is not able to help out, who then will? answer is – you, everyday people of Texas, which washington national IRS sees you only as Tax-asses, u need to rise up demanding your rights to land benefits that international masons inc. sucking out from you like vampire or snake bite. So Texans must form now a firm alliance with a free world united and seek independence ASAP, or there will be no world peace ever, Bildeberg group after BP oil disaster held a meeting which they plan to go in war for oil, English reptilian royal families secret services together with German nazi Thule society left offs, made that rig explode into ocean, black sun color ritual is being made all over, Ch. BlackHawks won the NHL trophy, N.Orleans Saints (black gold- oil reference) . Now in S.Africa we have S.A. flag 3 lined Y shaped snake reptilian’s tongue symbols of arriving revelation’s beast dragon and WW3 coming to our extra sense notice -pointing to World War 3, with nuke symbol. Sure, we all wont peace, so if there is a time machine somebody should travel back and erase last couple of years.. , that are leading all world astray, trying to manipulate human souls with luciferian enslavement agenda of second sun creation via Jupiter Ignition that leads humans into end world events, and the end of 2012. Proclaim Kosovo is Serbia now, save Texas, or else hell’s gate awaits.

Great poster art. I loved these in no particular order:

England: How appropriate for them to be “tied” to 1966, their last win. Fellas, Greece just called and they want to put 480 BC in their poster, the year they won the Battle of Thermopylae.
Germany: What can I say. That’s so damn German. Are those sausages under his arm?
Mexico: I thought for sure the coach would have a still-beating heart in one of his hands. Fail.
Netherlands: Sing it with me: “The Ambiguously Gay Quartet”
North Korea: I love it! Pegasus flying above a mushroom cloud. You go Little Kim!
Paraguay: I think that leaf in his left hand is reefer

205 critias June 21, 2010 at 12:28 pm

A large part of Serbian historical heritage from the Middle Ages is located on Kosovo i Metohija (for instance, churches; a considerable portion of those churches were either destroyed, damaged or forcefully converted to mosques by Albanians). That “tiny piece of broken land” is a part of Serbian cultural identity. It may be tiny to you, but it’s 15% of Serbian territory. How would you feel if you weren’t all that powerful and some country decides to take say Texas, California and Montana from you, without your consent (and that you can’t take it back using conventional methods because the opposing country is much stronger than you)? That’s roughly 15% of US territory (I’m assuming that you’re from US). You could still function without it but that simply isn’t right, right :) ? Or let’s speak biological: let’s say someone takes your kidney (one of them) and appendix without your consent. Without them, you can still live pretty much as you did before, but it’s not OK that someone can simply take what they need from you just because they want it. Because, who knows, on another day, they just might take something far more valuable, something you can’t live without.

206 the Truth June 21, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Not only that, but USA obviously knows there’s something in Kosovo they want.
This can either be a rare mineral (gold, silver, etc.), coals, oil, uranium or something like that. USA doesn’t really give a shit about albanians and what happened in Kosovo, they just know that Serbs would never allow their land to be an American controlled colony, where as Albanians think they’re “free” under American control.
