ESPN has released its first video to begin its promotion of the 2010 World Cup which it’ll be broadcasting in the United States.
The video is targeted at the average American mainstream sports fan and explains how global the game is and destroys some of the typical criticisms about soccer such as the low scoring games, why the United States isn’t a soccer giantpower, and other stereotypes.
To be honest, I had no idea who Kenny Mayne was before I saw this video. He’s the main guy featured and is a sports journalist for ESPN having previously appeared on SportsCenter.

clearly you have no idea who he was, because his name is Kenny Mayne…. anyways, good for ESPN to pump up the beautiful game….

Thanks Vik. I corrected his first name. Yep, this is the first time I’ve seen this bloke. Must be pretty big on ESPN and in U.S. sports media?

kenny mayne is the dry witted oddball that ESPN has do their “pieces” about stuff noone knows about. however, he usually makes the viewer interested in what before, they were not. great ad. makes itself a target to be rejected by joe sportsfan, but elitist soccer snob could take note and welcome the noobs with open arms.

Great idea, but it rambled on a bit. And was a bit preachy. Could have been funnier.

looks like this wasnt exclusive to soccer at all. its a bit called fan feast, not really a video to promote anything. just thought that should be said since the video is presented as the first of many videos or ads that ESPN will be releasing to promote the world cup. really its nothing more than a segment that happened to be about soccer this time. i just saw another one for the 100 yard dash. oh well, still cool

he covers horse racing for ESPN. Apparently, you’re all to young to remember him as one of the best sportscenter anchors of all time. He and Dan Patrick are still my all time favorite, right ahead of Keith Olberman and Dan Patrick. But who could forget the halycon days of Berman and Ley?
Listen to me ramble…I’m so nervous about Aug 12th, I can’t stop rambling like this…USA!

I liked it. Presents all the stereotypical comments I hear in the USA. Kind of surprised. Often ESPN commentators have some smart ass comment to make about soccer when they’re showing highlights on Sportcenter.

great job by ESPN to know their audience. I have yet to see this commercial on tv yet.
