Fox Soccer Channel and ESPN have been busy in preparation for next summer’s World Cup.
According to SportsBusiness Daily, Fox will be airing two shows. One, “Ticket To South Africa” will feature post-match analysis of
the day’s World Cup games. Two, in the run up to tournament, Fox will show “Passport to South Africa,” which will be a mini-series featuring the history of the World Cup.
ESPN, meanwhile, have been spending a lot of money and resources in preparation for next summer’s World Cup. Read the following article to better understand how much of an investment they’re making in fiber technology.
In other World Cup news, ESPN will broadcast the World Cup draw live on December 4, 2009 although the network has yet to decide which channel to show the draw. Univision meanwhile will be broadcasting their coverage online as well as on television.

Was very excited to become a new ‘football’ fan when I saw ESPN was going to be broadcasting the World Cup. Managed to CHOKE DOWN ONE game but had to turn the volume COMPLETELY OFF because of that bullshit buzzing sound.
Nice going FIFA – I’ll never watch another South African anything that allows those idiots in the stands with those things.

We were wating for this World Cub broadcast for weeks. Now due to this horrible buzzing noise, we cannot even watch the games.
We are earnestly requesting you to stop the noise so that we can enjoy the games.
ESPN or FIFA, do something about the horrible buzzing sound. ESPN, i know you paid tons of money to showcase this event and sell advertisemnts. With this noise, many watchers are going to watch with the sound turned off. Either filter it out so we can hear the crowd and the announcers, or talk to FIFA about banning the horns at the stadium.
The buzzing sound has made the games unwatchable. The World Cup should never be played in South Africa again.

I tried watching the first 2 games but that droning noise drives me crazy. My girlfriend agrees & we will not be watching any more games if this continues. This is unfortunate since the world cup is only played every few years. I imagine people didnt see this one coming.

Well add a 6th, and I’m sure not the last, to turn off the buzz. My friend had just convinced me to start following this world-wide event but the noise has COMPLETELY turned me off. It’s just BAD culture, business, technology, planning – whatever you call it – IT STINKS. I will not watch as long as the BUZZ is present.

The noise is there and annoying (learnmedia). Be honest with yourself about it. That said, I do admire the time you have spent defending your own opinion with such tenacity! If I was able to have that much time and heart to spend dismantling another person’s point of view, I would consider myself an “arse” (aka ass, depending which side of the pond you’re on).
Therefore, you are either: old (i.e. your bringing up football from the 60s, and I’m still not sure if you mean USA football, or futball), or else you are just grumpy (i.e. because you are old and can’t hear the noise so you don’t understand what everyone else is talking about), or maybe, you are just bored and need something to complain about.

I was just starting to enjoy soccer and trying to understand it when I tuned in ESPN’S World Cup Soccer and heard this constant awful buzzing noise. I tried watching it on MUTE, but gave up after a few minutes.
What does ESPN plan to to about it? It’s really discouraging for new fans like me.

It is just about bearable if you forget about it and it becomes a sort of world cup ambience – but when you focus on the damned drone it makes watching unbearable.

They pushed the media real hard to try to get people to watch fifa because americans are not big on soccer…then they let fans play those stupid horns, and now no one wants to watch!! Ban the darned vuvuzela. I have been waiting for 4 years to watch the World Cup, and now I can’t watch it. That noise is just so annoying. Ridiculous. If you can’t ban it, at least put a filter on it, so it isn’t heard on TV. I use noise canceling headphones on airplanes so that I don’t have to hear that sound. Can’t the same technology be applied to the games on TV?

@learnmedia you are a complete and utter tool if you think that sound is even remotely enjoyable or endearing. I am nearly half deaf myself but even so, I can not watch the matches without the TV muted because the sound gives me a massive headache. I can assure you that if you or anybody else were to use one of those wretched noisemakers around me while I was attending an (American rules) football game, you would quickly find it lodged in your rectum.
FIFA really needs to do something about those things. Respecting the local culture is one thing but not when the local culture is completely ruining so many people’s enjoyment of the game.
For everyone who is complaining about the buzzing sound, get over it. It just goes to show how spoiled everyone is. Everything has to be so perfect that we can’t learn to tolerate anything that is not to our liking, even the most insignificant things.

Bssssssszzzzzzzz – making people deaf and this is a great concern for me thinking of my son flying to S.A. next Friday to watch Australia : Serbia. My mother from overseas rang me this afternoon, telling me about ear plugs being sold out in Johannesburg and surroundings due to the bee noise in the stadiums and that I should tell my son to buy some ear plugs BEFORE he leaves. That’s just unbelievable!!!
oh yea, forgot something: We watch some of the matches on SBS (in Australia) and the buzzing sound is there as well, so I guess it has nothing to do with ESPN. That’s just the horns from the majority of fans. Don’t know what got into them but I guess part of their excitement to be there plays some sort of role. People get a little bit crazy when excited. I’m glad that I’m not going to S.A. I was thinking though to visit Brasil in 4 years because I haven’t been to South America yet and this would be a nice reason (especially for my boys who just looooove soccer). Now that I’ve read that the horn buzzing idea might originate from Brazilian soccer fans, well, I’m not so sure anymore of flying there anymore……

I’ve never been a soccer fan, but I thought I would watch a little of the WC games. Big mistake! After a minute, I hit the mute button, and then a few minutes later, tuned into another program. Those horns must be what they use to make people confess to crimes they haven’t committed.
I don’t understand how the people in the stands can enjoy the game with this awful noise. For that matter, if you’re blowing on one of those obnoxious horns constantly, how can you even watch the game?
This will just confirm Americans’ opinion that any sport where players fall to the ground in fake agony when they are barely touched and where the game can end in a 0-0 tie, is not much of a sport.
LOL. Just having moved and not having my TV hooked up for the last 2 weeks (I’ve been busy with work anyway) kept me out of the loop. I’m a HUGE fan of ALL sports and watched pretty much every match of the ’06 WC. I just BINGed the buzzing noise and quickly found this “venting” thread. You all crack me up. I understand both sides of the issue. The buzzing noise is DEFINITELY annoying but it is there and if the networks filter it out (I’ve designed digital audio filters before and it’d be a piece of cake for ESPN / ABC to minimize it) you miss out on what is really happening at the event.
So I say watch, listen, and appreciate the local and world sports culture you are fortunate enough to be experiencing – even if it is really annoying.
I watched the end of the Kiwi / Slovak match this morning and it was a VERY exciting finish. Worth dealing with the buzz!
