Its the final week of Libertadores action, the bracket for the knockout stage is set. Teams fought hard to get closer to becoming the champion of the 50th Copa Libertadores. On Tuesday, the top two teams in Groups 7 and 8 were finalized. In Group 7, the only drama was who would finish 2nd as Gremio had already won the group. La U De Chile's Juan Gonzalez scored the knockout stage advancing goal in the 74th minute as La U de Chile beat Aurora on the road. That result along with Chicó's 3-0 loss to Gremio in Porto Alegre ensured that the Chileans would finish 2nd with 10 points just 1 point ahead of Chicó and move on.

In Group 8, Mexican side San Luis won 2nd place in the group and a place in the knockout stage with their stunning 2-0 road win against group winners Libertad. Former River Plate midfielder Jairo Patiño scored on a free kick to highlight the San Luis victory. San Luis had to win by at least 2 goals and Universitario of Peru had to lose by at least 2 goals. Universitario lost 2-0 on the road to San Lorenzo giving the Mexican side a place in the knockout stage by way of a better goal differential.

On Wednesday Groups 1 & 6 were decided. In Group 1, both Brazilian sides advanced with 2008 Copa do Brasil champions Sport Recife winning the group with 13 points after their 3-2 road win over '08 Libertadores Champs Liga De Quito. Andrade's double and 2 Liga players being red carded helped O Leão to the win. Palmeiras recovered from a rough start in the group to win 2nd place after traveling to Chile and defeating Colo Colo 1-0 on the strength of Cleiton Xavier's 87th minute goal.

Group 6 matches were a pair of 1-1 draws. Everton drew with Chivas of Guadalajara needing a win to advance to the knockout stage. The Everton-Chivas draw eased Caracas' nerves enough where they drew with Lanus in Argentina. Caracas won the group and their 10 points means they will be the #8 seed, the lowest seed of the group winners.

Thursday's matches featured Groups 2 & 3. Group 3 had its qualifiers before the games as Nacional of Uruguay captured the group with 11 points and San Martin of Peru in 2nd with 8 points. The results of the final matches for Group 3 are for knockout stage seeding as Nacional of Uruguay beat Nacional of Paraguay to claim the 3rd seed & San Martin lost 3-0 to River to claim the last spot in the knockout stage.

In Group 2, Boca eliminated Venezuelan side Deportivo Tachira by defeating Tchira 3-0 at La Bombonera. Los Xeneizes go into the knockout stage as the #2 seed while Ecuador's Deportivo Cuenca claimed the 2nd spot in Group 2 by way of a 1-1 draw versus Guarani. That draw coupled with Tachira's loss means that there will be at least 1 Ecuadorian side in the knockout stage.

50 Years of Passion is what the 50th Anniversary Copa Libertadores is all about. The tournament is 2 weeks away from finalizing the seedings for the knockout stage. There is still a lot of maneuvering as teams look to finish in the top 2 slots in their groups.

Group 6 is setting up for some massive drama on the final day after Venezuelan side FC Caracas pulled an important 3 points at home versus Chilean side Everton. Darío Figueroa’s penalty in the 62nd minute sealed the gritty 1-0 win and moved FC Caracas into 1st place. Chivas of Guadalajara failed to better their position in the group after their 0-0 home draw versus Lanus and now sit 1 point back of Caracas in 2nd with Everton in 3rd sitting 2 points behind the Venezuelans.

Wednesday featured 4 Brazilian teams in action. Palmeiras hosted Sport Recife in a crucial Group 1 match that ended in a 1-1 draw that boosted Sport’s chances of advancing to its 1st ever knockout stage. Wilson’s 45th minute goal canceled out Keirrison’s 15th minute penalty. Sao Paulo lost 2-1 in Colombia to Independiente Medellin and lost their undefeated record however the Tricolor Paulista is still in the next round. Gremio remained unbeaten with a big 2-0 road win versus La U de Chile. Tricolor Gaucho is now in a good spot for a #1 seed in the knockout stage.

On Thursday, Boyacá Chicó moved closer to their 1st ever knockout stage when they beat Aurora 2-1 at home. Marco Perez scored the eventual game winner in the 69th minute, the Colombians are in 2nd place in Group 7 with 9 points and only need a draw in their next match to advance.

A full week of Libertadores matches took place this week as teams seek points to advance to the knockout stages which are less than 1 month away.  On Tuesday, Libertad’s perfect record ended with a 2-1 road loss to Universitario in Lima.  The Peruvians took the 3 points when Piero Alva scoring in the 62 minute to move Universitario into 2nd place in Group 8 with 8 points.  La U just needs a draw against San Lorenzo in their next match to insure their place in the Round of 16.

Wednesday’s matches were less dramatic than Tuesday’s as every team won by at least 2 goals.  The most impressive being Estudiantes’ 4-0 win over Cruzeiro in La Plata. Cristian Sanchez Prette continued his heroics with 2 late goals to solidify the La Pincha victory and 2nd place in Group 5. The midfielder, on loan from Romanian club CFR Cluj, continues a memorable stretch.  He scored the equalizer late against eternal rival Gimnasia last Sunday and added his first goals of the Libertadores in beating Cruzeiro.

Thursday’s matches featured the biggest name teams in the tournament.  Defending champions Liga De Quito lost 3 points at home to Colo Colo when veteran forward Claudio Bieler scored an own goal in 2nd half injury time to split points with the Chilean side.  The ‘08 champions are now 2 points out of a Round of 16 spot with 2 matches remaining.

3-time Copa Libertadores champions Sao Paulo got two goals from Borges and managed to keep the 3 points despite an own goal from Sao Paulo icon Rogerio Ceni.  The 2-1 victory at the Morumbi over Uruguay’s Defensor Sporting moved Tricolor Paulista into 1st place of Group 4 and pretty much secured a spot into the Round of 16.

Boca Juniors continued their smooth ride towards a 7th Libertadores title with a comfortable 3-1 home win versus Paraguayan side Guarani.  Los Xeneizes biggest names came through as Martin Palermo, Rodrigo Palacio, & Juan Roman Riquelme scored to give Boca the victory and inside track for the #1 seed in the knockout stage.

We are getting close to the end of the group stage as teams jockey for higher seeds in the Round of 16.  As expected, the big name teams displayed their power this week.

Boca Juniors continued their confident play in the group stage with a 3-1 road win vs Guarani of Paraguay.  Boca dominated the 2nd half in taking the 3 points as their 3 big names, Riquelme, Palermo, and Palacio each scored.  Los Xeneizes lead Group 2 with 9 points from 3 matches.

Sao Paulo also flexed its muscle as they beat Defensor Sporting in Uruguay 1-0. Borges scored the game winner in the 39th minute as Tricolor Paulista moved to the top of Group 4 and remained undefeated.

Libertad strengthened its case for the #1 seed in the Round of 16 with a bit of luck.  The Paraguayan side travelled to Argentina to face San Lorenzo and got the 3 points off the foot of San Lorenzo's Gaston Aguirre.  Libertad's defense was able to hold off San Lorenzo in a balanced game. Libertad has 12 points in 4 matches.

Thursday witnessed a gush of goals, as both home teams rampaged their opponents.  Nacional of Montevideo blitzed Argentine club River Plate by a 3-0 score.  River contributed to its misery when Mariano Barbosa put the ball into his own net to give the home team a 2-0 lead at the time.  The victory maintains Nacional's perfect record in Group 3.

Estudiantes La Plata broke out of a Libertadores goal scoring slump with a 4-1 thumping of Deportivo Quito. Ex-Boca striker, Mauro Boselli scored a hat trick to lead the 3-time champions to the home victory and 2nd place in Group 5.

That was the scene last year when Liga De Quito stunned the world with their Libertadores triumph.  Every team in the group stage is vying to feel the same joy & euphoria. With every team having played at least 2 group matches after this week of Libertadores matches, it is becoming clear who are the pretenders and the contenders for the crown of  "Champions of The Americas". 

Wednesday's matches could be characterized as emotional considering that in those 4 games, there were 5 goals and 6 red cards.  Gremio had the best result of Wednesday with their 1-0 road win versus Colombian side Boyacá Chicó.

On Thursday, Colo Colo showed their strength at home with a 3-0 win over Liga De Quito.  The Chilean super club blitzed the Ecuadoreans with 3 goals in an 8 minute span in the 2nd half, capped by star striker Lucas Barrios 3rd goal of the tournament.  Colo Colo is now tied with Sport Recife of Brazil atop Group 1 with the Brazilian side having a game in hand. 

Estudiantes-La Plata continued a rough spell with a 1-0 loss to Deportivo Quito in Ecuador.  The Argentines were done in by an 84th minute goal by Leider Preciado.  In the past couple of weeks, Estudiantes has lost its coach, fallen to near bottom of the Argentine Clausura standings, and rumors are swirling that their talisman player Juan Sebastian Veron could be on his way out.   Estudiantes still have a shot to advance out of the group stage so there is still hope.

O Rei has experienced the joy of winning a couple of Libertadores with Santos of Brazil and even though Santos is not participating in the Libertadores this year, the tournament is still loaded with drama.  This past week was a positive time for Chilean clubs in the Libertadores.

Colo Colo surprised Palmeiras in Sao Paulo 3 -1 on the strength of attacking duo Lucas Barrios & Macnelly Torres. Both men scored in leading the Chilean super club to its 1st victory of the group stage. 

Universidad de Chile beat down Bolivian side Aurora 3 - 0 at home to remain unbeaten in Group 7 and move to the top of the group.  Defenders contributed heavily to La U's victory with defenders Manuel Iturra  & Jose Rojas  scoring for the Chilean side.

Sport Recife continued its surprising play in Group 1 with a 2 - 0 victory over defending Libertadores champions, Liga De Quito.  The '08 Copa Do Brasil champions are have a perfect record with 6 points and lead Group 1. With victories over Colo Colo and Liga the team from the Pernambuco state in Brazil look very dangerous.

The big name clubs exerted their power this week with important road wins.  Boca Juniors got a late header from Luciano Figueroa in the 88th minute to beat Deportivo Tachira 1 - 0 in Venezuela and Sao Paulo got 2 goals from star striker & ex-Fluminense hero Washington to beat America de Cali 3 - 1 in Colombia.

We are officially in full swing this week for the Copa Libertadores because every team has now played in the group stage.  We will soon know who are the pretenders and the contenders in the chase to win the 50th Anniversary of the Copa Libertadores. 

Deportivo Cuenca moved to the top of Group 2 with an impressive 4-0 win at home versus Guarani of Paraguay.  The Ecuadorians had a balanced attack as 4 different players scored in the victory.  However, they were outdone by Chivas Rayadas.

The Mexican super club embarrassed Everton of Chile 6-2 at the Estadio Jalisco with 5 different players scoring.  Javier Hernandez scored twice deep into the 2nd half to heap the humiliation on Everton.   

 The only side not to get points at home were Libertadores debutants San Luis of Mexico.  Luis Alberto Ramirez scored early for Libertad as the Paraguayan side defeated San Luis 1-0.  The Mexican side could not equalize despite having a man advantage after Libertad's Victor Caceres was red carded in the 75th.  The loss left San Luis with 0 points at the bottom of  Group 8 with a -4 goal differential.

"50 años de pasión", "50 Years Of Passion."  The 50th edition of South America's greatest club tournament is underway.  The all important group stage is taking place with teams all over the continent vying for the Libertadores trophy and a spot in the FIFA Club World Cup.  

The defending champions, Liga De Quito began their quest to repeat with an exciting 3-2 win over Palmeiras.  Wálter Calderon scored twice in a back in forth affair with Damián Manso scoring the game winner in the 58th minute to put Liga atop Group 1 tied with Sport Recife of Brazil.

Speaking of Sport Recife, the Brazilian side pulled the surprise result of the week by beating Colo Colo 2-1 in Chile.  The 2008 Copa Do Brazil champs jumped on Colo Colo early with goals in 7th minute by Ciro & right before half-time in the 44th by his strike partner Wilson.  The Chileans replied in the 71st when their super striker Lucas Barrios scored but it wasn't enough to prevent Sport from getting the 3 points. 

Perennial favorites, Boca Juniors edged a conservative Deportivo Cuenca side 1-0 at La Bombonera.  Rodrigo Palacio scored for Los Xeneizes in the 13th minute to take down the Ecuadorian side. 

Another pre-tourney favorite, São Paulo, had a disppointing start to their Libertadores campaign as Independiente Medellin almost pulled three points from The Morumbi.  The Colombians took the lead in the 79th minute when 2nd half sub Luis Arias scored for the 1-0 lead but the Brazilian champs pushed and a 2nd half  injury time goal from Borges salvaged a point for the Tricolor Paulista.
