Canada Advances Behind DeRo Brace: Group of Death Next

June 21st, 2008 By Kartik Krishnaiyer --> Comments

Dale Mitchell’s Canadian side continued its rise in CONCACAF with a 4-1 victory over St Vincent on Friday night and now enters the group of death in CONCACAF with Jamaica, Honduras and presumably Mexico. It can be strongly argued (as it will be here) that four of the five best CONCACAF footballing nations at this point in time have been drawn together in an impossible group for qualifying. Dwayne DeRosario added to continued success of MLS players this World Cup qualifying cycle (while MLS itself insists on accelerating their schedule during these qualifiers ensuring players like DeRosario, Carlos Ruiz, Kei Kamara and others who are giving credit to the league with their performances abroad miss as many club matches as possible) with two goals. Canada won the two leg tie by an aggregate score of 7-1.

While we looked good against StV, I am concerned about the next round. We have to have to have to win our home games in order to have any shot of advancing. I would be shocked if we went to either Mexico or Honduras and got a result. Honduras we might pull a draw at best but that's a tough fixture. We won't be able to play the same up-tempo game against Mexico or Honduras as they're much better technically than StV. StV reminded me of some of the African national sides -- supremely athletic but just a shade behind technically and tactically.

I'm also not forgetting about Jamaica. They are ranked 98th but as Jason de Vos (former Cdn captain) mentioned on the StV broadcast: "The players do not pay attention to the FIFA rankings". Canada should be able to beat Jamaica home and away.
